Danneel Ackles Instagram - “Our country is in chaos. But it's a great time to be an American” is the title of an article I read this morning by John Blake. It is easy to let the chaos and fear of a global pandemic, the political divide on virtually everything in this country, and the uprising for social justice in the streets, make this 4th of July feel like one to pass on. But John Blake writes a compelling article on why now, America or more specifically Americans deserve to be celebrated. As I watch my children play in the yard with an American flag and I ponder his words, I know he is right. Blake sites historian Erika Doss who sees a parallel between the protestors of today and those of the 1776 Revolution who brought down symbols of the rule of Great Britain, because they didn’t stand for who they were at the time. They took them down and they reimagined themselves as a new nation. Blake also speaks to the new definition of what it means to be a patriot. He praises the American Hero of today, the front line healthcare workers, the essential works and those fighting for freedom in the streets. Danneel Ackles Instagram - Happy Mother’s Day Moms. This one is bittersweet for sure. In the past few months, I frequently have both joy and sadness find me in the same moment. Anyone else? What a roller coaster of emotions we must all learn to manage!?! Recently, I was taking a walk with my babies. My daughters each held one of my hands while my son rode on his Daddy’s shoulders. Just watching them filled my heart with pure joy. I looked up, the sun was shining and I had never been happier. My oldest daughter noticed my smile and we locked eyes....I had to look away quickly so I didn’t burst into tears. Their innocence and vulnerability to threats in our world and my responsibility as a mom to protect them suddenly seemed overwhelming. She squeezed my hand again and I looked back. She smiled. She was happy. She was at ease. She believed that I was strong, that I could protect her, and so she ran ahead to play. My breath came back. Our children can give us the power to rise above the fear and anxiety and to be the protectors they KNOW we are. Happy Mother’s Day. As an Asian American and a woman - already exhausted from, well, my entire life and last year - I am tired, frustrated and sickened. • if you are not aware of the insane rise in violence towards Asians, almost 4000 anti-Asian crimes last year with multiple murders for example, you need to broaden your network just as you did last year for BLM. Where is your solidarity and empathy now? I’m asking for your help. Many don’t have Asian friends and/or follow many Asian people, change that now. • Asian women have been continually sexualized and fetishized, this needs to stop now! We are not your exotic playthings. • Asian women have also been and continue to be the butt of jokes, how many times have you heard “me love you long time”? • There is a massive misconception around AAPI folks — we are not crazy rich and we are not doing okay. the fact is 1 in 4 Asian Americans lives below the poverty line and Harvard Business Review recently released that Asians are the LEAST likely BIPOC in the workplace to be promoted. The PERCEPTION is that Asians are managers and successful, but the reality is we are not. • a HUGE part of the AAPI community (esp older generations) has a language barrier and so doesn’t report crimes, talk about being a victim, which further adds to a misunderstanding that everything is fine • classism and misogyny and colonialism run DEEP, it’s not just racism at work here. The only way forward is for ALL marginalized communities to come together, stop letting history divide us all and come together as one majority to move forward. One of these cottages was our Teen Parent and Early Childhood cottage, which houses teen parents in the foster care system and their babies. We moved kids, mattresses, and baby beds to another cottage, only to have the same thing happen again. We are now shuffling some kids and staff across town to ensure that we have space, including beds for staff who are taking double shifts when other youth care workers are stuck in the snow. The Children’s Shelter needs the following: drinking water, frozen pizzas, cold and hot cereal, and wipes. You can drop them off at the Children’s Shelter at 4800 Manor Road. We watched helplessly as both our fellow Americans and those from all parts of the world lost their lives in the attacks. We prayed for our first responders as they bravely charged towards certain danger. It was a time of uncertainty and our future felt in jeopardy, but we came together and out of that tragedy was born resilience and hope.
