24 years ago when we were given a diagnosis that would change the trajectory of our lives, a woman was in the doctors waiting room and told me that autism would become a blessing in my life. I didn’t want to hear that then. I was gutted and scared. But the blessing is this young man who fills my soul every day with pride and so much love. 🥹🥹🥹YOU ARE A BLESSING, RJ PEETE!!! I didn’t know you, but I DO know you. You remind me so much of my RJ. And when he was exactly the age you were when you were killed , 15-he had a very similar mental health crisis in public . We were at a concert venue and he started freaking out in the parking lot because there was something that he wanted to do that we couldn’t let him do. He was at once confused, angry frustrated he couldn’t express his self. Complete sensory overload. He didn’t understand and he started throwing things. He started kicking the car windows of strangers ..we all tried to talk him and calm him down -we tried to grab him -but he was in an emotional rage. We were outside. I heard someone say they were going to call 911 and I’m sure the call would’ve been “black male in Inglewood being violent.” If I didn’t have my other kids with me to help me get him in the car and calm him down, it would’ve ended differently and maybe, he would’ve been killed on the spot by a cop who didn’t understand what was going on with him and feared for their safety…😢😢😢😢How do we stop this? How do we get more compassionate, nuanced law-enforcement training? . How can we get a program where someone with de-escalation and mental health training accompanies a cop on this call and then this doesn’t happen.WE MUST DO BETTER- We must stop failing our children….

No parallel play, no eye contact , very little language, lining up toys, tiptoe walking …The pediatrician said “don’t worry- he will catch up to his twin sister… boys develop slower than girls.” There I was with my big fat camcorder, ready to capture this milestone moment. But as soon as we got to the classroom, I noticed RJ just started playing in a corner by himself. He wouldn’t engage with any of the other boys who were running in packs as typical boys do. Ryan put her focus on making sure her twin brother was OK and so she neglected making friends…what was supposed to be such a beautiful experience turned out to be a sad helpless nightmare that ended with the school eventually telling me our son was “not teachable.” …one of the worst periods of this journey. 💔Months later, he would be given a definitive #Autism diagnosis which definitely answered so many of my questions and put together some pieces of the puzzle…

I eventually found the school that would teach him and provide support for him and I’m so grateful to that school to this day!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Keep advocating for your child!!

Ryan LOVED the @dodgers and @lakers. He was adopted at 2 years old from an abusive situation… given a chance in the world by his amazing adoptive parents Sharon and Norman even though they were told he was “unadoptable” due to his epilepsy, crohns #autism and other behavioral issues. But they fought for him and provided a good life for him. They helped him mainstream in school. His brain was special. He had hopes and dreams for his future…
For those of us who have children on the spectrum, we know that there can be episodes and emotional outbursts from time to time. Controlling emotions can be really difficult for them. These can be especially difficult to navigate during the teenage years. Those of you have black children, living with autism you probably already know that your child is exponentially more likely to be killed or injured by law enforcement… Ms Sharon is in a wheelchair paralyzed on one side of her body and she really needed support that day…. San Bernardino sheriff knew the house well and if there had been any level of community policing communication or any program in place, a mental health trained official could accompany the call this tragic impulsive shooting does not happen.

My RJ had his share of these sensory overload episodes and once in public where people threatened to call the police. The bottom line is there needs to be CHANGE in the way law-enforcement deals with these domestic autism and mental health issues when families need help with a loved one. DE-Escalation. Non Lethal Options. And then the way the family was treated afterward was unnecessarily cruel and heartless😡
Ryan should be alive today… Period. He’d come so far. Overcame so much just to be shot dead 3 times in his front yard.💔His mother wanted people to see him in his casket with all of his favorite things. He was just a sweet boy trying to navigate a world that didn’t value him

Holly Robinson Peete - 20.5K Likes - 20 years ago, we lost a dear friend. Our favorite double date partners! John Ritter was arguably one of the most liked people in this industry. Nobody and I mean nobody had a bad thing to say about him. To know him personally and to get to be around him was a blessing that we will always cherish. In 2003 he passed away because he was misdiagnosed as having a heart attack when he was really having an aortic dissection. It was absolutely the saddest most tragic thing ever to lose him that way, 💔Tonight, his beautiful forever wife and my Virgo sis @yasbeckamy held the @johnritterfoundation gala continuing to raise awareness about aortic health in the world. We will never stop missing John, but we are so proud of Amy and everyone involved in this Foundation who continue to keep his name and legacy alive by literally saving lives!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🫀

Holly Robinson Peete - 14.8K Likes - My heart is completely shattered. 💔💔💔Poor Ryan…We cannot afford to call the police when our loved ones are in mental health crisis situation…They will likely shoot to kill first and ask questions later. They’re not equipped to de-escalate and have compassion so for our young people with autism when they are in a crisis situation there needs to be some kind of trained mental health counselor that comes out on these calls to de-escalate. We simply have to find this resource. We can’t keep losing our young people and we also can’t be scared to call 911 when there’s a crisis. But we absolutely must let authorities know about the autism -not that it will necessarily change the outcome…🥺🥺🥺🥺
We simply shouldn’t have to worry that they’re going to end up dead. I’m very sure this family was scared to death and just never thought that calling 911 would result in their loved one being shot to death. Many will look at the video and say well Ryan was charging the cop with a garden tool, and the cop was scared what could’ve been done. There are many ways to de-escalate, and there are so many non-lethal weapons. Why can’t they use those?!

Caption : My heart is completely shattered. 💔💔💔Poor Ryan…We cannot afford to call the police when our loved ones are in mental health crisis situation…They will likely shoot to kill first and ask questions later. They’re not equipped to de-escalate and have compassion so for our young people with autism when they are in a crisis situation there needs to be some kind of trained mental health counselor that comes out on these calls to de-escalate. We simply have to find this resource. We can’t keep losing our young people and we also can’t be scared to call 911 when there’s a crisis. But we absolutely must let authorities know about the autism -not that it will necessarily change the outcome…🥺🥺🥺🥺 We simply shouldn’t have to worry that they’re going to end up dead. I’m very sure this family was scared to death and just never thought that calling 911 would result in their loved one being shot to death. Many will look at the video and say well Ryan was charging the cop with a garden tool, and the cop was scared what could’ve been done. There are many ways to de-escalate, and there are so many non-lethal weapons. Why can’t they use those?!
