Dan was fresh from a rescue covered in goat shit, I was waddling like I swallowed a ford focus, I had also drooled on my shirt during a recent nap, the sunset was beautiful (hallelujah for something nice), it was perfect and perfectly us. We’ve said “we should start planning a wedding” and gestured around vaguely at least once a week with no follow through because that bulbous belly is now a giggling, crawling, center of our universe who is better than everyone you know and who has the time.

Kassandra Clementi Instagram - When we were discharged from the hospital after our daughters birth, we were all wearing our identification wristbands. Baby and I promptly took ours off, but Dan kept his on. He kept his on for a whole 3 weeks. The band that stated the names of his girls, the band that stated that we were his and she was here. He wore it until the last bit of ink had worn away. He is so proud to be her Dad. I am so proud that he is hers. We are so lucky that he is ours. Happy (belated because of aforementioned tiny person) first Father’s Day, honey. The ultimate Girl Dad.

Kassandra Clementi Instagram - My girl, You are currently fast asleep on my chest and I’m sitting here, an hour and a half deep, breathing you all in. I never want to forget these moments with you. Of stillness and fullness and an infinity between us. You are a piece of me and all of me. One day you will grow and you will be a piece of me and all of you. But for now - we are here, intwined in each other in this chair, our warmth holding each others, your breath and mine meeting on our cheeks, sharing oxygen like we always have. The weight of your body slowing the rise and fall of my chest, just enough to sense our calm a little deeper. I would hold you forever if I could. But I know how you will grow, and oh how I want you to. I know that one day I will have to loosen my arms, let you breathe your breath into the world without me, maybe one day find your comfort in another, but I hope you always know that you will never outgrow my body, and that my chest will always be a home for you to come back to. Loving babies has nothing to do with my view on abortion and everything to do with the people those babies grow to be and hoping they have access to health care and the choice to have autonomy over their one and only precious body. The over turning of Roe V Wade would inconvenience those with access to finances but they would be able to travel to a state that allows them to have access to safe and legal abortion. Those who will be gravely effected are those who cannot afford to do so. Their choices at that point are torturous and horrific. Other peoples bodies are none of our business. Not unless they ask us to be. And I don’t think any person with a uterus, or any trans or non-binary people or anyone else under threat of losing bodily autonomy are going to Mitch McConnell and his friends for advice on what to do with our being. No one’s life is a montage of skipping through a daisy field with a golden retriever and a rainbow shooting from their ass - being human is hard. This society is hard. Everyone knows joy, and everyone knows hurt and no matter where we’re from or where we are, that connects us. There are parts of every person on earth that we would identify with, with such fierce familiarity and sometimes these people don’t come home. Be the depth and the humor and the flicker of hope in someone’s day. Look people in the eyes, see them, mean it. Give a shit. Give all of the shits. Find the people who do the same. The people who know the depths of themselves, the depths of each other, are such beautiful people. There is a place where you flourish - a place where your body softens and you breathe in color, because you belong - it is here - let it find you - stay. All the lessons, the trials and tribulations, my downfalls, the moments of question - they taught me everything I need to know so I can relay it all to you, and relay it all in a way that is healed and grown. From the second I found out you were inside of me, I would have risked it all. From the moment you entered through my body and our eyes met, I would have risked it all just for one moment with you. All of the moments from then until now, as I sit here, holding you, my sleeping one year old, have been - and I don’t mean this lightly - the fucking greatest time of my life. I haven’t always known what I want out of life, it’s a confusing place, the only thing I’ve ever been sure of is that I’ve wanted to be your mum. I was so ready for you, and you came into this world knowing it, like you were so ready for me too. I’ve never had less sleep and yet I’ve never had more vibrancy for life. I’ve never had less time in the day and yet I’ve never had such endless time for another person. I’ve never felt more fear of mortality and yet I’ve never believed more that the connectedness of two people far surpasses something of which can be killed. Today I described you as having the confidence of a white man on a yacht. You also have an innate and sparkly kindness that is so pure and tender. It fills me with pride and protection. You have a smile that takes up your whole face and shines through your eyes, and you are so excited to share it. You’re funny, you’re smart and you filed our taxes for us this year which was REALLY helpful. You mow the lawn on Sundays, even picking up all of the dog shit before you start, and you’ve stopped betting on the ponies which is great because it’s incredibly barbaric and you don’t have a job. We cosleep, breastfeed on demand, contact nap and are never apart. We are as together as we can be for two people who no longer share a body. You live outside of me now, but together is still our home. You turned 1 this week, my girl. I am so proud to have any small part in your brilliance.

Baby and I promptly took ours off, but Dan kept his on. He kept his on for a whole 3 weeks. The band that stated the names of his girls, the band that stated that we were his and she was here. All the lessons, the trials and tribulations, my downfalls, the moments of question - they taught me everything I need to know so I can relay it all to you, and relay it all in a way that is healed and grown. From the second I found out you were inside of me, I would have risked it all. From the moment you entered through my body and our eyes met, I would have risked it all just for one moment with you. All of the moments from then until now, as I sit here, holding you, my sleeping one year old, have been - and I don’t mean this lightly - the fucking greatest time of my life. I haven’t always known what I want out of life, it’s a confusing place, the only thing I’ve ever been sure of is that I’ve wanted to be your mum. I was so ready for you, and you came into this world knowing it, like you were so ready for me too. I’ve never had less sleep and yet I’ve never had more vibrancy for life. I’ve never had less time in the day and yet I’ve never had such endless time for another person. I’ve never felt more fear of mortality and yet I’ve never believed more that the connectedness of two people far surpasses something of which can be killed. Today I described you as having the confidence of a white man on a yacht. You also have an innate and sparkly kindness that is so pure and tender. It fills me with pride and protection. You have a smile that takes up your whole face and shines through your eyes, and you are so excited to share it. You’re funny, you’re smart and you filed our taxes for us this year which was REALLY helpful. You mow the lawn on Sundays, even picking up all of the dog shit before you start, and you’ve stopped betting on the ponies which is great because it’s incredibly barbaric and you don’t have a job. We cosleep, breastfeed on demand, contact nap and are never apart. We are as together as we can be for two people who no longer share a body. All the lessons, the trials and tribulations, my downfalls, the moments of question – they taught me everything I need to know so I can relay it all to you, and relay it all in a way that is healed and grown. From the second I found out you were inside of me, I would have risked it all. From the moment you entered through my body and our eyes met, I would have risked it all just for one moment with you. All of the moments from then until now, as I sit here, holding you, my sleeping one year old, have been – and I don’t mean this lightly – the fucking greatest time of my life. I haven’t always known what I want out of life, it’s a confusing place, the only thing I’ve ever been sure of is that I’ve wanted to be your mum. I was so ready for you, and you came into this world knowing it, like you were so ready for me too. I’ve never had less sleep and yet I’ve never had more vibrancy for life. I’ve never had less time in the day and yet I’ve never had such endless time for another person. I’ve never felt more fear of mortality and yet I’ve never believed more that the connectedness of two people far surpasses something of which can be killed. Today I described you as having the confidence of a white man on a yacht. You also have an innate and sparkly kindness that is so pure and tender. It fills me with pride and protection. You have a smile that takes up your whole face and shines through your eyes, and you are so excited to share it. You’re funny, you’re smart and you filed our taxes for us this year which was REALLY helpful. You mow the lawn on Sundays, even picking up all of the dog shit before you start, and you’ve stopped betting on the ponies which is great because it’s incredibly barbaric and you don’t have a job. We cosleep, breastfeed on demand, contact nap and are never apart. We are as together as we can be for two people who no longer share a body.
