Melinda Gates Instagram - This week, @MelindaFrenchGates, Amal Clooney, and I are in Malawi as part of an effort we launched last year between the @GirlsOpportunityAlliance, @GatesFoundation, and @ClooneyFoundationforJustice to help end child marriage and to support women and girls pursuing their education. We’re meeting with grassroots leaders and changemakers to hear their stories and find ways to support girls who are working to overcome barriers to pursue their dreams.

We met with young women who are part of @AGEAfrica — a program supported by the Girls Opportunity Alliance — that provides girls with scholarships, mentorship, and afterschool programming. I saw so much of myself in these bright young women, and I was just so moved by their determination and resilience.

Making sure girls finish school is one of the best ways to counter child marriage and help them reach their fullest potential. Over the next few days, we’ll be sharing more stories from our trip — hope you’ll follow along.

Melinda Gates Instagram - This #HumanRightsDay, we are thinking about the 12 million girls around the world who are forced to enter into child marriages every year.

Child marriage threatens girls’ health and safety, prevents them from getting an education, and can lead to them, their families, and their entire communities getting stuck in a cycle of poverty.

This time last year, we traveled to Malawi and South Africa to help bring more attention to this serious — and often overlooked — global issue to hear directly from our partners who are on the front lines working to end child marriage. We remain so inspired by the amazing girls and women we met, and the courageous advocates sharing their stories and raising attention about their plight.

Just a few weeks ago, Malawi launched a revitalized national strategy to end child marriage. In the past year, we’ve also seen countries including Colombia, Sierra Leone, the Central African Republic, and Zambia take steps to address this issue.

Every girl deserves the chance to determine her own future. That is only possible in a world without child marriage. As a global community, let’s recommit ourselves to ending child marriage once and for all.

Melinda Gates Instagram - Big day for us Texas girls. #cowboycarter #beyonce
Melinda Gates Instagram - The deaths of Renée Nicole Good and Alex Pretti are unconscionable and weighing heavily on so many of our hearts.

Over recent weeks, in Minneapolis and other communities across the country, we have seen neighbors standing up for each other with courage, compassion, and solidarity.

No one in the United States should ever have to fear losing their life for taking peaceful, principled action in support of their beliefs.

Our country is not our government—our country is us, we the people. For 250 years, we have been bound together by bedrock values, the rule of law, and inalienable rights.

There is nothing more American than exercising our rights and holding our government accountable. Our democracy depends on it.

Melinda Gates Instagram - When I needed to find a new pathway outside of the studio system to make my latest film ORIGIN, I thought of an old question that I’d long wondered about. Would those non-profits that I saw at the end of PBS documentaries ever consider making a narrative film with actors - if it was about a topic that aligned with their mission?

I called the one man who would have the answer - and in a turn of events that would change everything - he said yes. That man is Darren Walker of the Ford Foundation. He gave me and ARRAY Alliance’s Executive Director Regina Miller the courage to ask our long-time supporters Laurene Powell Jobs of Emerson Collective and Melinda Gates of Pivotal Ventures. These dynamic women leaders also said yes. Then, more like-minded partners came on board, like Anne Wojcicki, Kimberly Steward, Agnes Gund, Chris and Jada Paul, among many others.

You never know when people will say yes. So in the meantime, prepare the soil. Be ready when the time comes for the seeds you’ve planted to blossom. ORIGIN is the flower from a seed planted with the love and resources of many people. My heartfelt thanks to every foundation and individual who lent their sunlight to this work.

Thank you to Geoff Edgers for writing this story of our journey together. The link to his beautiful article is in my bio. xo

In our homes.
In our workplaces.
In our communities.
In the rooms where laws are passed.
And at the tables where decisions are made.
Melinda Gates Instagram - Dr. Foege wasn’t just a brilliant scientist, best known for helping eradicate smallpox. He was also an invaluable mentor, cherished friend, and steadfast example of the kind of leadership I’ve always admired: empathetic, generous, and humble.

With his passing last weekend, I’m reminded of his advice to strive for “science with a moral compass,” or science that serves humanity. Dr. Foege lived out that value in every corner of his life. May his legacy inspire others to do the same.
Melinda Gates Instagram - ‘A woman has to be well to do well in life’

@melindafrenchgates joined @itsanitarani in the Woman’s Hour studio today and spoke about why she thinks women’s health needs to be better funded.

The philanthropist is most well-known for co-founding the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000 with her then husband, Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

But since their divorce, she has left their joint enterprise and set up her own, Pivotal Ventures, which has one purpose: To put power into the hands of women.

Her company, along with the non-profit Wellcome Leap, have committed $100 million to women’s health research.

Melinda told Anita why she felt so passionate about focusing on this, and what she hopes will change.

Melinda Gates Instagram - @melindafrenchgates’ work isn’t finished yet.

Last year, French Gates made the “difficult” decision to move on from the Gates Foundation. Since then, she’s refocused her energy on other issues—namely, women’s rights—saying, “I am simply not willing to accept that my granddaughters could grow up with less freedom than I did.”

In our Changemakers Issue, Marie Claire spoke with the philanthropist about her new ambitions, the secret benefit of transitions, and the Monday morning tradition she’s been doing for 30 years.

Melinda Gates Instagram - My hero Jimmy Carter was a peacemaker, a public servant, a man of faith, a devoted partner to Rosalynn—and a Guinea worm’s worst nightmare. I knew him best as a global health advocate and deeply admired his dedication to taking on diseases that impact the world’s poorest people, like Guinea worm disease.

When President Carter left office, there were more than 3.5 million cases of this painful, debilitating disease around the world each year. This year, thanks in no small part to the work of the Carter Center, that number was down to single digits. He dreamed of outliving the last Guinea worm—and came incredibly close.

As he traveled around the world meeting with heads of state, monitoring elections, visiting clinics, and building homes, he took time to connect to the people he met. He believed in removing the barriers that separated a man like him—a former President and Nobel Prize winner—from people living with the realities of poverty and disease.

One of my favorite teachings says: “To know that even one life has breathed easier because you lived, this is to have succeeded.” We honor President Carter by remembering that because of him, life is healthier, better, and safer not just for one life, but for millions.

Melinda Gates Instagram - The most generous people in the world aren’t philanthropists writing big checks. Rather, it’s the everyday givers who use whatever resources they have—such as their time, talent, and voice—to serve others. Anyone can be a giver.

I was honored to teach this class on impactful giving with @MasterClass. I hope it inspires you to take the next—or first—step on your giving journey.

Melinda Gates Instagram - @michelleobama, Amal Clooney (@clooneyfoundationforjustice), and I share the belief that every girl deserves the chance to live the life she envisions for herself. That’s why we’ve joined forces to help end child marriage.

We recently traveled to Malawi and South Africa to learn from some of the people who are working to end this harmful practice. Their efforts are proving that progress is possible—and that everyone benefits when girls are free to shape their own futures.

Thank you to everyone who made this trip one to remember.
Melinda Gates Instagram - Happy Mother’s Day! Love you endlessly 🤍

Melinda Gates Instagram - Having women at all levels of government will make government work better — and there’s a realistic path to getting there.

In my latest op-ed, I reflect on what it’ll take to make our government truly representative of the people it serves.

Melinda Gates Instagram - Last week in London, I had a very moving and memorable night at #TheAlbies, an event hosted by the @clooneyfoundationforjustice named after the anti-apartheid activist and legal expert Justice Albie Sachs.

I met Justice Sachs in 1997 on my first trip to South Africa.

While I was in Johannesburg, I visited Constitution Hill, the infamous prison complex that, over the course of its dark history, held both Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi.

A guide walked me through the complex and told me about both the horrors that took place there and the heroism of the men and women who somehow emerged with the courage to continue their fight.

As the day went on, I started trying to draw out more of my guide’s story. He hadn’t said much about himself, but he was willing to answer my questions.

Eventually, he told me about his own activism against the apartheid regime. How he was arrested. Held in solitary confinement. Exiled. Nearly assassinated. How he lost his arm and part of his sight after South African security forces bombed his car—but still returned to South Africa to write equality into the law.

It turned out that my guide that day was Justice Albie Sachs himself.

He made an unforgettable impression on me. Frankly, it felt a bit surreal to be receiving an award at an event named for him and sharing a stage with an incredible slate of honorees: Darren Walker, José Rubén Zamora, Fatou Baldeh, and Marty Baron.

Justice Sachs, it was wonderful to see you there. I’m glad I had the chance to give you a hug and tell you that, all these years later, I still look to you as a guide. And thank you, Amal and George, for the important work you do in the world and for shining a light on the brave women and men who are continuing Justice Sachs’ march toward justice.

Melinda Gates Instagram - I’ve always loved spending time outside, and I’m so grateful for every beautiful place I’ve had a chance to visit. (This picture was taken in Banff National Park in Canada. All these years later, I still can’t get over the color of that lake!)

Melinda Gates Instagram - Every year, 12 million girls are married before the age of 18. Child marriage is a global issue that threatens a girl’s education, health, safety, and autonomy.

This week, I traveled to Malawi with @michelleobama and Amal Clooney (@clooneyfoundationforjustice) to learn more about the work being done there to protect girls’ futures. To everyone who shared their stories and expertise with us—including @girlsopportunityalliance, @ageafrica , @girlsnotbrides_ , Girls First Fund, and @womenlawyersassociationmalawi —thank you. Your efforts to end child marriage could not be more important.

There are 130 million caregivers in this country living these stories every day. They’re the backbone of our families, our communities, and our economy. Today, on #NationalCaregiversDay, let’s make sure they know we see them—and let’s keep pushing for the policies and resources they deserve.
Melinda Gates Instagram - How do we make sure that every girl has the chance to become the woman she wants to be?

That question was at the heart of a trip that @michelleobama, Amal Clooney (@clooneyfoundationforjustice), and I took to Malawi and South Africa, where we met some amazing girls and activists who are at the forefront of efforts to end child marriage, combat gender-based violence, and advance gender equality.

I remain in awe of their resilience and determination, and I’ll be thinking about the stories I heard for a long time to come.

Melinda Gates - 70.3K Likes - This week, @MelindaFrenchGates, Amal Clooney, and I are in Malawi as part of an effort we launched last year between the @GirlsOpportunityAlliance, @GatesFoundation, and @ClooneyFoundationforJustice to help end child marriage and to support women and girls pursuing their education.

Melinda Gates - 64.9K Likes - This #HumanRightsDay, we are thinking about the 12 million girls around the world who are forced to enter into child marriages every year.

Caption : The deaths of Renée Nicole Good and Alex Pretti are unconscionable and weighing heavily on so many of our hearts.

Melinda Gates - 34.1K Likes - When I needed to find a new pathway outside of the studio system to make my latest film ORIGIN, I thought of an old question that I’d long wondered about.

Melinda Gates - 29.6K Likes - Dr.

Melinda Gates - 22.3K Likes - My hero Jimmy Carter was a peacemaker, a public servant, a man of faith, a devoted partner to Rosalynn—and a Guinea worm’s worst nightmare.

We recently traveled to Malawi and South Africa to learn from some of the people who are working to end this harmful practice. Their efforts are proving that progress is possible—and that everyone benefits when girls are free to shape their own futures.

Thank you to everyone who made this trip one to remember.

She shared what it felt like to transition out of the White House, how knitting reminds her of the importance of small actions, and why she makes a point to cultivate new friendships. I can’t wait for you to watch our conversation 😊 Check it out at the link in my bio.

As I start my next decade, I’m feeling so grateful for all the transitions that have led me to where I am today, and I’m feeling extraordinarily energized about the work ahead. Thank you, Keziah (and @radhikajones), for giving me the space to talk about the difference I hope to help make. Read the article at the link in my bio.

Melinda Gates - 13.7K Likes - Last week in London, I had a very moving and memorable night at #TheAlbies, an event hosted by the @clooneyfoundationforjustice named after the anti-apartheid activist and legal expert Justice Albie Sachs.

Melinda Gates - 9.3K Likes - How do we make sure that every girl has the chance to become the woman she wants to be?

That question was at the heart of a trip that @michelleobama, Amal Clooney (@clooneyfoundationforjustice), and I took to Malawi and South Africa, where we met some amazing girls and activists who are at the forefront of efforts to end child marriage, combat gender-based violence, and advance gender equality.

I remain in awe of their resilience and determination, and I’ll be thinking about the stories I heard for a long time to come.
