Andrew Gillum Instagram – Today’s #womenshistorymonth feature is Rhode Island @mackdistrict6. Tiara is an educator and activist raised in the South.

Tiara works as a Youth Organizer, empowering young people to engage in local and national social issues. Tiara is a Board Member of Women’s Health and Education Fund (WHEF) and of the East Side/Mt. Hope YMCA.

Tiara decided to run for Rhode Island Senate in part to increase representation for the communities she is part of. “I was very cautiously optimistic,” she said. “Because I was hardworking, knocked on every single door during a global pandemic, got down to the nitty gritty…and building a team that would help me do the rest made me feel confident.”

A member of @nbjconthemove Good Trouble Network, Tiara is leading the way on more than 25 policies and is co-sponsoring several more this year. These policies include a bill to limit maximum solitary confinement to 15 days, as well as bills on source of income discrimination, affordable housing and comprehensive queer-inclusive sexual education.

We’re with you, Tiara!
Andrew Gillum Instagram – Poet, podcaster, and elected official… what can’t @mariahforathens do?!

A member of @nbjconthemove Good Trouble Network, Mariah Parker is part of a new wave of young women of color entering politics. She first made headlines after being sworn in as an Athens-Clarke County Commissioner, at age 26, with her hand on a copy of The Autobiography of Malcolm X held by her mother. Photos of her taking the oath went viral, highlighting the growing numbers of millennial Black women making their voices heard in local politics nationwide.

Mariah is also openly queer, a hip hop artist (her stage name is Linqua Franqa), a PhD candidate in linguistics at the University of Georgia where she is also a graduate teaching assistant in the department of language and literacy education, and community organizer dedicated to transformative politics and civic engagement. As County Commissioner, she is focusing on creating economic stability and racial justice as well as criminal justice reform and raising the minimum wage.

Mariah is also co-host of the @iheartreparations, a show on iHeartRadio about Hip Hop and politics where they explore the history of public policy and its impacts on Hip Hop life; what Hip Hop culture tells us about our political reality; and the role of Hip Hop in shaping our political future.

She’s a star, y’all! #womenshistorymonth
