It was one of the biggest honors of my life to give the graduation speech at @northwesternu this year – specifically the School of Communication- which I graduated from as a theater major 25 years ago. (!!!) Northwestern is one of my favorite places in the world. I cannot imagine my life personally or professionally without having gone there. The friends I made there – not to mention my acting teacher, the glorious and beloved MARY POOLE – changed my life for the better in just about every way and I underestimated how emotional it would be to return to campus and speak to the graduating seniors. I love Northwestern and the friends I made there very much. Thank you to everyone who made it happen, especially Dean Johnson, and graduating senior @orlylewittes who gave me a truly hilarious introduction. I have worshipped Nathan Lane since I first saw him on Broadway in “Guys and Dolls” when I was 13 years old. Getting to banter and sing with him on stage – along with 18,000 people – was truly a dream. Being a part of The Lion King has led to many unexpected and spectacular moments and this was one I’ll never forget (though I did miss my dear Pumbaa @sethrogen!!) This is part of the speech I gave at the graduation at @northwesternu a few weeks ago. I was really fortunate to study theater at Northwestern and being asked to give the speech was a huge honor and very meaningful to me. (The “Shanley” referenced in the speech is a small black box-style theater there where the students put on shows). This is not something I ever planned on posting publicly – it was written very specifically for the graduates of the School of Communication there, where I graduated 25 years ago – and where many of the students are seeking out careers in the arts and the media. And this video is an eternity by social media standards so I don’t really expect a lot of people to watch it. But the people who’ve seen it or found it online seem to be getting something good out of it so, for what it’s worth, I thought I’d post it here too, for anyone who might find it helpful. This is for all the recent graduates out there, at Northwestern and everywhere else (and maybe also for those of us middle aged folks trying to figure out our next chapter too).
