WE’RE OPENING OUR FIRST BROADWAY SHOW TOMORROW WHAT IS LIFE WTHASDFFGJL! . During these six weeks of previews we’ve had just the most lovely/loud audiences. From Britney fans (some of the best cosplay), to Broadway fans, to fairytale fans, to fellow artists from other shows, to friends, family and everything in between. And as people who are constantly battling through this complex questioning of belonging in this historical community and transitioning into directing, we have felt nothing but love, support and encouragement from this community. Whether inside our own company (past and present), artists from other shows, or our audiences… we’re so grateful for being welcomed with open arms and love. We’ve always imagined dance like ours on a Broadway stage and from day one you told us we were wanted. And damnit we want this too. Since September 29, at 2:15pm there’s been an immense hole left in our hearts when our first doggy, best friend, and baby boy crossed the rainbow bridge at 14 years old. It’s impossible to articulate the amount of love we have for him, or this unforeseen amount of pain we feel with his passing. I actually don’t even remember a life without my best friend… every day, every habit, and every moment will have to be relearned. Until then we’ll keep thinking about all the beautiful people that felt his unconditional love and gave him love… and how he inspired us yet again with his perfect last day. How the clouds parted and the sunlight gently filled our living room. How the subtlest breeze was the only sound that filled our quiet home. How time stood still, rewound, and fast forwarded all in the same moment. Cocoboy — our boy, our old man… you did it. You beat so many obstacles. You lived a beautiful life. Breathe. Life is throwing curveballs as we’re currently weathering a season of loss(es). No way I have any words to articulate yet, my heart just yearns specific things right now and one is to create. This piece was a spontaneous reaction, but a step in processing. When @mar.omin’s “When I’m Gone” came on shuffle it struck so hard in that moment that Mari and I just started shooting. God knows our souls needed it. And will still need more. I’m good, we’re good… in fact we’re freaking blessed and full of gratitude. But all this to just share in real time that it’s far from pretty all the time. Inhale. Exhale. Act 1 cutdown of “Your Biggest Fan” [full video a few posts back and on YouTube/vimeo] So that long gimbal shot… must’ve taken close to 40 takes until we got it. We had a lighting trick in it that added to operator shadow issues, which we ultimately cut. Plus the specificity of the mirror/reflection part which required me to use my body to cover the mirror as Mari crossed in front of the reflection path, then both of us to land our marks to catch me in the reflection.
