Malcolm-Jamal Warner Instagram – This is one of those moments where magic happens. The thing about this JAM that we do is none of it is rehearsed or thought out ahead of time. From the moment we step onstage we have no idea what we’re going to play. I started playing bass at 26 years old and have always played w cats who have played their entire lives and had great ears. So I dove head first into music theory. It was a great fast track but limiting in a lot ways only because I’ve typically used the theory to dictate what I’m playing. And obviously as an actor, I spend my life memorizing lines and rehearsing to be show ready. So this type of gig forces me to be present, listen, feel, and trust that I will make sense of whatever comes out. However it comes out. Playing with these biological sonic misfits for the past year and a half has been such an awesome and growing experience. They have been a gift in my development as a musician….but back to this magical moment. We’re already in a cool pocket. @imvnichole comes onstage and blesses the mic impromptu. She’s a beast. It’s perfect example of what I mentioned about being present and listening to each other. I play a chord substitution on my @anacondabasses and everything shifts. Me and @edgemuzik look at each other like “okay, let’s go” and we all hit overdrive. And the crowd ends up on their feet. This was the 2nd time I had the pleasure of seeing @imvnichole this week. And a special shoutout to one of my bass mentors @tresfunk. He influences me in ways that sometimes I don’t even realize. Oh, and side note y’all, fuck with people who fuck with you. Be around people who support you and want to see you grow. Productive critique is great and necessary when it comes from a loving and supportive place.
