Not one lie told. We know that beginning in the late 80’s there was a concentrated and deliberate push by record labels to promote misogyny, murder, and mayhem in hip music over anything conscious. So much so that we have been conditioned to normalize blaxploitation and the degradation of Black men and women in our music. Think about how much of our Black music, when you take away the music and just listen to the lyrics, is actually anti-Black? Name 4 out of your top 5 emcees’s who aren’t talking about niggas and bitches as if hip hop couldn’t exist without those terms-and I’m not saying those emcees don’t exist, I’m saying YOUR TOP 5. That being said, I recognize that to find dope emcees who do not follow this trend takes a bit more time to deep dive than I have these days so I eagerly invite you to tag any dopeness I should pay attention to and post or at least tag myself. Because I’ve always been quite vocal about the elements of hip hop I hate, I would love for you to help me do a better job of accentuating the positive aspects we should celebrate. 🙏🏿✊🏿🤘🏿

Here’s what I do know: we’ve been conditioned (duped, hoodwinked) into focusing on Presidential elections and ignoring the midterms. The President passes or vetos bills. Policies, bills, & laws are created in Congress so every two years we miss the opportunity to vote people in or out of office who have more of a direct impact on our communities interests & well being. The. President. Does. Not. Make. Laws. So by the time we vote for president, the trains have already left the station. I don’t care if you don’t care for Biden, I need you to look at the power the reigning party has. During the last administration, did you know McConnell appointed 210 federal conservative judges across the country? Judges who will uphold every nuance of law enacted to keep you in your place. Do you understand that Roe V. Wade, Affirmative Action AND the Voting Rights Act have all been rolled back bc of who our last POTUS appointed to the Supreme Court for life? The NAACP can no longer sue when our voting rights have been obstructed. I understand withholding our vote in theory. I do wholeheartedly. But realistically, where does that leave us? On the sidelines while people like these will be voting. Not voting puts you on the sidelines w no real right to complain. But you will complain. So complain to the people who have convinced you not to vote and sit idly by to watch more of your rights be taken away. If our vote doesn’t matter, then why are the GOP suppressing our vote at every angle they can? I invite any intelligent perspective on what withholding our vote actually gets us. This is one of those moments where magic happens. The thing about this JAM that we do is none of it is rehearsed or thought out ahead of time. From the moment we step onstage we have no idea what we’re going to play. I started playing bass at 26 years old and have always played w cats who have played their entire lives and had great ears. So I dove head first into music theory. It was a great fast track but limiting in a lot ways only because I’ve typically used the theory to dictate what I’m playing. And obviously as an actor, I spend my life memorizing lines and rehearsing to be show ready. So this type of gig forces me to be present, listen, feel, and trust that I will make sense of whatever comes out. However it comes out. Playing with these biological sonic misfits for the past year and a half has been such an awesome and growing experience. They have been a gift in my development as a musician….but back to this magical moment. We’re already in a cool pocket. @imvnichole comes onstage and blesses the mic impromptu. She’s a beast. It’s perfect example of what I mentioned about being present and listening to each other. I play a chord substitution on my @anacondabasses and everything shifts. Me and @edgemuzik look at each other like “okay, let’s go” and we all hit overdrive. And the crowd ends up on their feet. This was the 2nd time I had the pleasure of seeing @imvnichole this week.
