Sometimes I hear someone dope and don’t post bc I’m so over hearing N*gga in hip hop and I don’t want it misconstrued that I co-sign the shenanigans. Admittedly, I even struggle with a lot of my favorite hip hop songs I grew up on. Especially now that I see that in many ways, hip hop has become the oppressor’s super power. But sometimes the message is more important than the use of the word. And often, rappers do use the superpower to spread what we need to hear as opposed to what is normally mandated that we hear. Whether you fck w this cat @faiseone_ or not, there is not one lie told in this verse. I’ve not done a deep dive into his work, but so far I respect his game for going this route and forging his own path. Plus, I want to spend less time railing against the wack shit and more time shining light on the dope hip hop and artists who don’t just do what everybody else is doing by selling us out for the bag. This hurt my heart. I grew up listening to a legendary pianist who’s music was militant AF, without lyrics! I never got to meet my namesake. I was blessed enough to meet Dr. Betty Shabazz and be friendly with Malcolm X’s daughters. I wish I made it more of a mission to meet Brother Jamal. There was a time we were supposed to appear together, but it didn’t work out schedule wise. Hindsight is always 20/20. I wish I had been more diligent. If there’s someone who comes to mind that you want to see or reach out to, do not hesitate. Do not take it for granted that you will always have that opportunity. In recent years I hear more and more my mother tell me she thought about calling someone, didn’t, and then shortly hear that they passed. Please, spread that love when you feel it. Do not hesitate. My father was so enamored by Maclolm X and @ahmad.jamal.official that he made my first name from their names. People think I’m being picky when I point out when the hyphen in my name is either missing or misplaced. My first name is Malcolm-Jamal. I’m proud of it. I always have been. Stop fucking it up (jokingnotjoking). Both of my namesakes are gone. I’m sad. Rest. In. Power. Elders. Thank you both for what you gave the word. Asante Sana.
