Life is hard. But it’s worth it to try. Because who I get to be as a result of trying is worth it. Even in the darkest moments, there exists the potential for redemption, rebuilding, and the reclamation of one’s life… Today’s guest is a living embodiment of this truth. This week Osher Günsberg (Australia’s most prominent television host) goes deep and gets vulnerable on his struggles with substance abuse, his hard-fought journey back to sanity and well-being after a terrifying break from reality, and his ongoing commitment to raising mental health awareness. Episode 776. Link in bio. ✌🏼🌱 – Rich
Ten years today I met @audreygriffen outside the comedy store in Sydney so we could watch @heggieluke’s set. Only then did she realise that it was a date. She had no idea that we would fall in love, she would save my life and we would have the most wonderful family together. You’re a stone cold stunner honey, with a kind heart that’s a beacon seen from space. Happy anniversary my love.
The wildest thing about addiction is that the number one symptom of it is convincing you that you don’t have it. Another symptom is convincing the people around you to enable it. Loving detachment is a very difficult thing to do – however it’s vital to get help for the people you love. Today’s episode is another cracker that we recorded live in front of a packed house at @SXSWsydney. It’s a welcome return to the show for one of the most important voices in Australia when it comes to the treatment of addiction. Diane Young is a Psychotherapist and Holistic Counsellor who is the Director of Clinical Supervision at South Pacific Private, Australia’s leading treatment centre of addiction, anxiety and depression. Addiction is a misunderstood disease. By the time you’re asking someone to “behave responsibly”, their dopamine system is so disregulated that any message which gets in the way of the addictive behaviour from happening is futile. Sure, it might be a choice the first time however once it stops being a choice – the outcomes for the addict are sadly predictable with the timelines ranging from decades to less than a few months in some cases. After Di Young’s epic live episode from @sxswsydney on Wednesday, I wanted to put a show out that gives a basic outline of the way addiction can work, and how the people around the addict may be affected as well. So you think you know @snezanawood? Turns out there’s far more to this remarkable mother of four who has a degree in Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology and once scrubbed toilets for a job, than how she met her husband… Search “Better Than Yesterday” where you get your podcasts or click the link in the stories.
Have you ever wanted to prove someone wrong so badly, that you end up doing exactly what they said you couldn’t? I mean, spite can be a heck of a motivator (just ask Larry David) but it’s not very sustainable. But what about proving yourself wrong? What if it’s a version of yourself that reckons you can’t do it? Would you be willing to prove them wrong? After speaking with @snezanawood on Wednesday I had a few thoughts about why it’s important from time to time to deliberately try things you think you can’t do… Search “Better Than Yesterday” where you get your podcasts or click the link in the stories.
I am willing to bet that you know at least two phone numbers. Your own mobile, and the number for long-closed mechanic or pizza shop from years ago… The reason you remember that other number is because it was set to music. I’ll round out my multi leg with the bet that, you just sang the jingle to it in your head right now. The wonderful @TeenyTinyStevies join me on the show this week to talk all about how songs can help us remember more than just phone numbers, and how music can be helpful, especially for little people. Do you ever sing-narrate your life? Ever wonder why you remember things a bit better when you chuck a melody over the top? After chatting with @teenytinystevies the other day I went down the rabbit hole on memory, melodies and music. Now if only I can get our youngest to remember to go to the bathroom to have a bath… Search “Better Than Yesterday” where you get your podcasts or click the link in the stories.
Rule Number 7: The moment your heart doesn’t race when you turn on the microphone, get out of the chair and give someone else a go. I’m slowly working my way through the 101 Rules of Show Business on Monday’s episodes, and rule 7 is a doozy. Even if you never work in entertainment, it’s a rule that can remind you when it’s time to step aside from something (even a relationship!). Also Rule 9 will blow your mind. You’ll never think about getting fired the same way. Search “Better Than Yesterday” where you get your podcasts or click the link in the stories.
The coolest thing about this car is that it’s 100% electric. The next coolest thing is the steering wheel warmer. It’s an opulent luxury right now! Join me and the #NissanLEAF for a day and see what I get up to. @nissanaustralia #nissanpartner
During a recent gameshow development workshop with a live audience, I was explaining why certain elements of the format fit together, and how certain suggestions from the crowd would or wouldn’t work. I found myself using the reasoning “it’s one of the rules of show-business, you always…” By the end of the workshop I’d got to about 12 “rules of show-business”. The other day I sat down and started to write them out. Don’t worry – even if you don’t have a career in entertainment I’m sure you’ll find these useful.
