Speaking with @gusworland on wedensday I got to thinking about being mentally fit and wondering what is the one mental exercise that can give you the mental equivalent of oiled-up washboard abs? For me, its noticing. Noticing that… I’m feeling frustrated. My eye hurts. The noisy room full of kids has suddenly gotten concerningly quiet. Noticing gives us time to be present and to bring our mind out of catastophising, and into right now. I use this all the time, even when I’ve been really unwell. In fact – this technique has saved my life. Search Better Than Yesterday in your podcast app or click the link
What do you get when you cross a musical composer with a 600 horsepower v-12 engine? Well, I’m not sure, but someone who does know is today’s guest @blairjoscelyne Blair is a former high-school composer and one of the new hosts of Top Gear Australia, but you might also know him one of the hosts of Mighty Car Mods, a Aussie car-based YouTube channel with over 1 billion views. We chat about starting a YouTube channel in the early days of YouTube, how he came to be the guitar player for the Macca’s jingle, and how he learned was actually playing the wrong tune after the ads were released. So whether it’s your guitar or car that needs a tune up, or you just need a bit of wisdom, I couldn’t think of a better person to talk to this week about music, motors, and much much more. @topgear Australia Premieres on Paramount on May 17. @yumistynes and @osher_gunsbergon reflect on the power of Australian music festivals. What’s your favourite festival moment? Listen back to Double J’s 10th birthday now via the @abclisten app.
I learned something new with my psych the other day – I have a lingering hidden trauma response which has been messing with my life. You’ve heard of “Fight or Flight” well, there’s a 3rd option: Freeze. I didn’t realise that a freeze response has been stuffing me up for decades until just the other day. (Turns out it’s the reason I took a nap on 9/11). Today’s podcast is a deep dive into how ancient hidden trauma responses can still be messing with your life, where they come from, what to do about them, how tonic mobility can even stop you from talking (which is what happens to me) and a surprising aside into the hunting behaviour of Orcas. Extra extra bonus question: Who made my cup?
Good morning. You’re welcome.
Do you own a sauna? Have you christened it in the traditional way? Because yes, there’s absolutely a way to do it and I’ll tell you the whole thing on today’s podcast, which is all about the sauna. It’s no hyperbole – since the sauna came to live in our house, I’ve never slept better and I’ve been enjoying remarkable improvement in mood. Every now and then after a podcast, guests will hang out and get in there with me to continue the conversation. It’s a lovely place to chat. The science behind it is really quite fascinating, so I dug right into it on the show today, the tradition however is equally fascinating so if you’ll excuse my terrible impression of @henrikis I hope you get a lot out of it. What an absolutely epic way to celebrate 10 years. Thanks to everybody that called in, and sent us a text. Thank you to the brilliant production team who helped us out. Working with a professional like Yumi is dream come true. I’m so grateful I get to do it quite a bit. Happy birthday X2J @5minutefoodfix @doublejradio (and yes I rode the motorbike home through the rain pumping @shihad_the_band – it was legittttt)
Talking to @osher_gunsberg was so refreshing and insightful. He was curious about everything including the horse 🐎 I used to ride to primary school (yes this actually happened), the selfish act of volunteering and the tiny steps to rebuilding and recovery. Take a listen to the chat on his podcast @ogbetterthanyesterday ❤️

After speaking with @jodirodgers_ on Wednesday, I was reminded about an experience using a fascinating way to develop theory of mind: the three chairs technique . While it sounds like mental musical chairs, it’s actually quite powerful and super accessible. Have you tried this one? What techniques do you use to try to see things from another person’s perspective? Search Better Than Yesterday where you get your podcasts or click the link *it’s where you think.
Hello doomscroller. Want to stop doom scrolling? What if I told you that the same things that get us hooked while our thumbs scroll around 388m per day (yes that’s a real number) can be used to help us stop it? Here’s a clue – we don’t do it all at once. We take teeny tiny tiptoe steps. What itsy-bitsy teeny weeny steps are you taking today? What are you moving towards? Would you feel better about not seeing “happily ever after” as a possibility if you knew that “happily ever after” has probably never existed? @jodirodgers_ is my guest this week. You know her from the massive hit “Love on the Spectrum”. The way Jodi speaks about the reality of relationships (whether you’re neurodiverse or not) is so refreshing, simple and straight ahead it’s safe to say I learned a lot, and I’m sure you will too. How could you ever come back from the absolutely catastrophic betrayal and horrific circumstances that @tracyleehall endured? When you think about her story, it’s reasonable to expect that a victim of such a profoundly awful crime would never want to set foot out of the house again, no ever again look another person in the eye. However that’s not Tracy . Not at all. You can’t be what you can’t see, and victims of scams or betrayals (or in her case both and then some) might not ever be able to imagine a future where they’d ever feel ok trusting another person again. Today’s podcast episode will hopefully show that there is another way. It takes work – however listening to Tracy, it’s clearly worth it. @blairjoscelyne came over, we spoke about bands with very spiky logos and the secrets of @jonathanlapaglia’s on-the-road workout routine. Search Better Than Yesterday in your pods or click the link that’s where you think. Come for the car talk. Stay for the Macca’s jingle story. @topgear_au is happening and @mightycarmods is next level as always.
Last night I had a dream that @nunobettencourtofficial from Extreme was in my house teaching me how to play the intro for “more than words“. He was getting increasingly frustrated because I kept messing it up. Perhaps also because I was naked. I went to put some clothes on, and tried to play him some Australian power metal to cheer him up – but he was increasing less interested. Perhaps because he is the Lord of all guitar players and is now teaching a bloke in his 50s a riff from 30 years ago. The thing is, I know how to play this perfectly, and I usually wear clothes when I’m in the room with someone who is not my wife. (Actually, I once performed this with @adamzammit1 at the one and only gig of “Hole Hearted, the Extreme Australian Extreme Experience” our tribute band that performed at a farewell for @ladycakesb before she spilt to Londres) The GPT would not draw me naked – so you’ll have to use your imagination. Anyway that’s what I dreamed about last night. You?
