An excerpt of Ryuichi’s words from a press kit for “BEAUTY” released in 1990
“I have found a map in my mind. I call it a cultural map. People have different cultures in their minds. There is no pure culture in the world. That’s my opinion. Cultures are all mixed with different places. I always find similarities between different cultures. For example, domestic Japanese folk-pop music sounds like Arabic music to me – I’m talking about vocal intonation and vibration. In my mind, Bali is beside New York, and besides New York, there’s Tokyo – and people would have that kind of cultural map in their heads. This is the way I’ve been working.”
“Early ‘80s new wave was often based on a kind of ethnic music, this music people now call ‘world music’. In England, The Pop Group, for example, was best at African music, but people didn’t call it world music then. Of course, there is a difference now, but also a continuation. And so for “Beauty” I wanted to develop that feeling – and that way of making music. At the time of Neo Geo, I now think I was a bit shy to go for it. I used Japanese, Indonesian, and Chinese music – maybe a little bit of Indian. Now I’m moving toward the west as well -through India, Iraq, Pakistan, the Middle East, and finally, I reached to Africa.”
