『Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus』 ・Lack of Love ・BB ・Andata ・Solitude ・for Johann ・Aubade2020 ・Ichimei- small happiness ・Mizu no Naka no Bagatelle ・Bibo no Aozora ・Aqua ・Tong Poo ・The Wuthering Heights ・20220302 – sarabande ・The Sheltering Sky ・20180219 (w/prepared piano) ・The Last Emperor ・Trioon ・Happy End ・Merry Christmas Mr.Lawrence ・Opus – ending #坂本龍一 #ryuichisakamoto #Opus #skmt_OPUS @skmtgram

SKMT | dig Listen to “Beauty” via link in bio 🔗 An excerpt of Ryuichi’s words from a press kit for “BEAUTY” released in 1990 “I have found a map in my mind. I call it a cultural map. People have different cultures in their minds. There is no pure culture in the world. That’s my opinion. Cultures are all mixed with different places. I always find similarities between different cultures. For example, domestic Japanese folk-pop music sounds like Arabic music to me – I’m talking about vocal intonation and vibration. In my mind, Bali is beside New York, and besides New York, there’s Tokyo – and people would have that kind of cultural map in their heads. This is the way I’ve been working.” “Early ‘80s new wave was often based on a kind of ethnic music, this music people now call ‘world music’. In England, The Pop Group, for example, was best at African music, but people didn’t call it world music then. Of course, there is a difference now, but also a continuation. And so for “Beauty” I wanted to develop that feeling – and that way of making music. At the time of Neo Geo, I now think I was a bit shy to go for it. I used Japanese, Indonesian, and Chinese music – maybe a little bit of Indian. Now I’m moving toward the west as well -through India, Iraq, Pakistan, the Middle East, and finally, I reached to Africa.” Photo by Albert Watson (#1 press kit, #3 Artist photo) #skmtnews #skmtdig #ryuichisakamoto #beautybay

WKCR announces our second birthday celebration for Japanese artist Ryuichi Sakamoto, broadcast on FM and HD radio and online 24 hours on Wednesday, January 17th, 2024. The special broadcast will run from the conclusion of Honky Tonkin’ until Som do Brasil at 12:00am on Thursday. The broadcast will preempt all regularly-scheduled Wednesday shows. Ryuichi Sakamoto was a Japanese composer, musician, and record producer who had a long and successful career in the music industry before passing away this past March. Sakamoto rose to international prominence as a founding member of the electronic music group Yellow Magic Orchestra in the late 1970s, blending traditional Japanese sounds with innovative synth-pop. Beyond his success with YMO, Sakamoto has ventured into diverse musical territories, collaborating with artists across genres and pushing the boundaries of avant-garde and experimental music. His solo career showcases a remarkable discography, featuring albums like “Thousand Knives” (1978), “B-2 Unit” (1980), and the critically acclaimed “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” soundtrack (1983). Sakamoto’s avant-garde importance lies in his ability to seamlessly fuse electronic, classical, and world music influences, establishing himself as a trailblazer in the development of various musical styles and genres, including ambient, experimental, and world music. The broadcast will feature live programming focusing on deep dives into Sakamoto’s catalog and his artistry ⭐️ #ryuichisakamoto Graphic design by Ben Erdmann

SKMT | dig 🌑 “Ending” from “Alexei and the Spring” (2002) Directed by Seiichi Motohashi Original Score by Ryuichi Sakamoto Listen: https://kabamerica.lnk.to/Ending A true story of life in the former Soviet Union following the tragedy of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Nearly 200 kilometers downwind from the maimed nuclear plant, the tiny village of Budische was evacuated except for 55 elderly residents and one young man, Alexei, who wished to stay with his family. “Alexei and the Spring” is a simple story of life in Budische 14 years later, as told in voiceover by Alexei. Central to Budische’s survival is its fabled spring, the waters of which are miraculously free of radiation. #skmtnews #ryuichisakamoto #坂本龍一 #SKMTDIG #Ending #alexeiandthespring
