Natalie Haynes

Natalie Haynes Instagram – I saw this Cy Twombly in San Francisco earlier this year – I wrote about one of his graphisms in Divine Might (it’s the end of the Aphrodite chapter), but I didn’t even know this one was on display. I love its urgency, the way it demands your attention – very much like Dionysus, who it references with ‘mainomenos’ written at the top.
This is a word used for the ecstatic raving madness of possession by Dionysus, the time when the Bacchae – his revellers or worshippers – took to the hills and roamed as wild women who might uproot a tree or dismember a man.
The god of wine and theatre is a dangerous god – and I think all of that is captured in this painting.
