I am back in the UK safe and sound, thanks to Hygieia and Athene (and the warrior doctors and nurses they inspire)! Second photo was my last day in Melbourne – my friends took me to the beach, so I didn’t miss seeing the sea 💙

Rare image of the goddess Nike petting her invisible cat
I hate accidence (except when we went from friends to this) 🎶
This is from the beginning of the 6th century BCE, and it is an extraordinary depiction of the minotaur – he looks slender and athletic, like a dancer almost. Then look at his beautiful lion tail!
What, Instagram, do we think is going on here? I love this girl biting her frock – or are they folding laundry? I don’t think I have ever seen such a posture on another vase – it’s so funny and cute. Whatever they’re doing, she is flirting like crazy, because LOOK at that reaction shot behind her

It’s election day here in the UK, so here is a coin from the first century BCE, depicting an election during the Roman Republic. On the back of the coin you can see a really clear image of a man dropping his voting tablet into a cista, or basket. Numismatists have identified that his tablet is inscribed with the letter V — short for ubi rogas – as you ask. So this was a vote in favour of a proposal or candidate. Perhaps we can see a modern echo of this Latin phrase in the Obama slogan, Yes we can. On the other side of the coin is the goddess Vesta (you can tell it’s her because she is veiled). So not only do I hope you’re voting positively today, but I also hope that the goddess who lives at the centre of our homes and civic spaces – who turns buildings into places where communities gather – is presiding over all our votes. Did I mention she is often depicted in Pompeian bakeries? Why not buy yourself a bun when you’ve voted? Have a lovely day! Coin source: https://www.bmimages.com/preview.asp?image=01613099705
Welcome to The Tortured Poets Archive! 💔 Delve into the stacks with us to find ancient poets Monday to Friday this week, bringing their tortured souls to light in honour of @taylorswift’s Tortured Poets Department. It’s Day 2 of The Tortured Poets Archive! 💔 Are you ready for the Sappho / Swift crossover? A committed performance of the opening of the Ajax, where Odysseus is tracking the footprints of the man who has slaughtered Greek cattle and cowherds, as he tries to uncover the culprit #GoslingSophocles
I saw this Cy Twombly in San Francisco earlier this year – I wrote about one of his graphisms in Divine Might (it’s the end of the Aphrodite chapter), but I didn’t even know this one was on display. I love its urgency, the way it demands your attention – very much like Dionysus, who it references with ‘mainomenos’ written at the top. This is a word used for the ecstatic raving madness of possession by Dionysus, the time when the Bacchae – his revellers or worshippers – took to the hills and roamed as wild women who might uproot a tree or dismember a man. The god of wine and theatre is a dangerous god – and I think all of that is captured in this painting. Don’t drink and dismember!
Well, that was a VERY brief trip to Amsterdam – 17 hours in total (not my shortest ever visit – I was once sent over for 5 hrs to review an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum). But I had such a good time with everyone from @de_balie (thank you for looking after me), loved performing at the beautiful Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, snuck in an interview and a photoshoot for Divine Might (out this week in Dutch!), and got to hang out with theatre goddess @elinearbo. Let’s hope the travel gods are kinder about my next few trips…
