Thanks to superhuman efforts from dozens of amazing medical staff, it looks like I am on the mend. Please keep sending your prayers to Asclepius and Hygieia – there’s still work to do. But I am feeling much stronger, so I’ll try to keep that up! (Thanks to my pal L for getting me some gothier clothes, now I’m allowed to wear my own again 🖤)

Just a note to say thanks so much for all your messages and well-wishes – it helped me to feel connected to myself when I really needed it. I’m out of hospital, and though I won’t be running races any time soon, I did manage a short walk in the sunshine today. Thank you for bearing with us – some more tour dates will have to shift, I’m afraid, but we’ll get things back on track as and when we can and we’ll keep you updated as we do it. Special thanks to M who has kept this part of my life running, and P for organising my convalescence the same way she organises most of my life. Couldn’t have done it without you.

What’s that? You wish you knew more about herons in Greek myth? Then let me help you out. Hippodamia and Autonous had several children, including two son, Erodius and Anthus. Autonous had many herds of horses which he didn’t really know how to look after. One day, Anthus tried to move some of his father’s mares from their pasture and they became angry and attacked, beginning to eat him. His father did nothing to help and was turned into a quail by Zeus. His mother fought hard, but couldn’t defend the boy on her own – she became a crested lark. Erodius became a heron, as did the man who had served Anthus before the horse chomping incident. But – and our source is very clear on this – not the same sort of heron. Herons don’t associate with anthus birds, and anthus birds avoid horses. If they even hear a neigh they fly off, pretending to neigh themselves. You can find this story in Antoninus Liberalis’ Metamorphoses
