I’m so excited that my first honour as an actor is in the home country, Canada. Wow. And to be handed it by one of my favourite people in the world @hmzlhq .Thank you to my parents. Thank you to my phenomenal acting coach @michelelonsdalesmith without whom this performance would not have been what it was. And to my director @thefawz for casting an Indian woman in a Pakistani part. And it’s a big deal. Pushing for unity between two countries that were once one. Colonization pushed us to a place to division, genocide, and now two counties who once loved each other live in absolute vitriol. It’s a scary time to be an artist. I am scared. I am scared to speak up. But this honor reminds me that I am an artist. And as an artist, it is my job to feel and to empathize. And for those of you who are telling us artists not to speak up in fear of losing jobs, in fear of losing careers, in fear of losing reputation, you are telling us NOT to be ARTISTS. As we were setting up for a movie shot, I kept on escaping to spend time with Dudu. Yep, that’s him, the charming ivory horse who I met at the French Beach in Karachi. I mean, he did greet me by peeing beside my feet, but aside from that... ha!...very charming. He’s so beautiful he doesn’t look real. It is an animal close to my heart and seems to keep reappearing in my life - and Pakistan has so much respect for these animals. That’s me kissing Fawzia @thefawz , the director and writer of Me, My Mom & Sharmila – thank you for trusting me to be part of telling a beautifully written mother/daughter story, trusting me with your language, and characters close to your heart. Thank you to my coach and all my comrades at @gracemoonarts who held me accountable to be able to tell the story, for manifesting @hmzlhq and I working in a film together years ago. Every part of it – the late night/early morning coachings, acting with one of my closest friends, being in Pakistan was a dream. To the entire MMMS team – thank you for the opportunity to work and live in Pakistan. It meant not only the world to me, but my parents who’ve never been able to visit their place of ancestry. I got to see Pakistan with my eyes for their hearts. I loved that most of the heads of departments were women, taking their rightful place. You all taught me so much – mostly, about service. To Pakistan – I have never met people who’ve more selflessly been in service. Finding joy in service. Something in my bones that I’m now so clearly reminded of. Thank you @eastwestplayers for having me. 🙏🏽 I stepped out of the theatre watching Everything Everywhere All at Once blown away, inspired, mighty proud, sending long voice-messages to all my watsapp groups. The movie and performances explored the depths of our contemplative human existence with a brilliant sense of humour. What’s even more inspiring was that it was a movie where an Asian family just happened to be messengers of the creative message; they were just humans on screen. It wasn’t about them being Asian and that’s the next step forward for minority communities in film, which Michelle Yeoh for decades and now with this movie, have pioneered. Asians as humans, special yet the same as everyone else. Thank you for paving the path for all Asians and particularly Asian women. I’m so moved and thrilled about their work, to celebrate Michelle Yeoh, and the movie’s entire team. Truly one of the best films I’ve ever seen.
