Sasha Sagan Instagram - Time is so mysterious. I can never seem to wrap my mind around it. Today is 25 years since my dad died. But that feels impossible somehow. Maybe this is why marking this day is so important to me, so I can begin to grasp the passage of time. Today is all the more bewildering but much less painful because like a faraway star my dad’s bright light keeps reaching us all these years later. I know so many of you still read by that light, still navigate by that light, still bask in it. And it means a lot.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Oh, how I wish my dad was still here and we were celebrating his 86th birthday tonight with a chocolate cake. I miss him very much and I know many of you do as well. I am so grateful to him and to all of you who still love him and carry on his legacy in different ways. Happy #carlsaganday everyone!
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Nearly three weeks ago this small creature came into this strange and wondrous, terrible, beautiful, heartbreaking and magnificent world. He was born weighing almost 10lbs with a full head of dark hair. And when they put him in my arms, with hearts full of hope and boundless love, we whispered “welcome to the planet Earth, Isaac”.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - It’s been 24 years and I still miss my dad very much. I know many of you do too. Somehow this December 20th it feels especially hard, maybe due to the nature of this strange and painful year. Today I’m going to try to find something of his to read or watch that I’ve never seen before and revel in gratitude that he left so much wisdom behind.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Every year on this day I am astonished by how much time has passed since my dad was here. Today it’s 23 years. There’s a part of me that still cannot wrap my mind around it. Every year on this day I am also astonished by the outpouring from people who still read his work, still quote him, still learn from him, still mourn him, and still love him, too. Thank you. It means more to me than I can say.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - My paperback— complete with a gorgeous new cover and extras in the back— comes out tomorrow!!! #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I cannot begin to express how proud I am to be this woman’s daughter. I know I say she’s brilliant a lot, but she really truly astonishes me with what and how she creates. The new season of #cosmos is profoundly hopeful and deeply moving. And it’s her vision. I’m so excited for everyone to see it starting March 9th 🌌♥️ #cosmospossibleworlds #anndruyan
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This beautiful, enlightening, hopeful book written by my beautiful, enlightening, hopeful mother comes out on Tuesday 🌌♥️ #cosmospossibleworlds
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I am just blown away by this incredible portrait @fellmina created to go with my interview in the new issue of @infiniteworldsmagazine 🧬✨💙 Thank you, Angela!!!
Sasha Sagan Instagram - My mother sent me this a few days ago. She found it while sorting through some things. I can’t stop looking at it. In part because my daughter is now about the age I am here. I keep finding her face in mine. If you read my book you know I love and miss the two gentlemen in this photo, my dad and my Grandpa Harry, very much. (And also that I feel rather strongly about photo booths.) So #stayhome and maybe find some lost treasures.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - My book came out one year ago today in a world that seems like an unrecognizable dream where traveling around the country, meeting people, and shaking hands was safe and easy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to every single person who has read For Small Creatures Such As We. And especially to those of you who reached out to me. (I know I still owe a lot of you emails, thank you for your patience! I haven’t forgotten). I cannot tell you how much I’m looking forward to participating in all sorts of rituals that involve being together in person again when it’s safe. ✨ #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I am 39 years old today. And also 25 weeks pregnant. And also the mother of an amazing 4 year old who whispers little pearls of wisdom to my belly (slide 2). And also wife to an irresistible man who very patiently takes dozens of photos of me with a giant baby head sculpture so that I can post two. Really just feeling very lucky and bursting with gratitude today ♥️🎂

Sasha Sagan Instagram - Yesterday was my 40th birthday and it was one for the ages. I guess I thought I might be kinda emotional about turning 40, multiple of ten and all. But time only moves in one direction, and it was a truly spectacular day. I feel very lucky. Thank you so much to everyone who wrote and called me with birthday wishes. And especially to my dream of a husband who planned a glorious adventure for us. I really have everything I could ever need or want. Except one thing: for you, dear U.S. reader, to vote today. For a greener, safer, more just, more equitable, more scientifically-literate, more welcoming society, please. Or else I shudder to think where we might be by the time I turn 50.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Thank you, dear @amyrosoffdavis @samanthamurphyable & @lilyrabe #challengeaccepted. I am so lucky to have spent so much of my life surrounded by brilliant, wise, hilarious, brave, bold, supportive women, so I am following Lily’s lead and taking this opportunity to make a donation to an organization that supports women and girls: @thelovelandfoundation #womensupportingwomen #womanempowerment
Sasha Sagan Instagram - My husband gave me this card yesterday for our wedding anniversary. If you read my book you know why this is just about the most romantic thing imaginable to me. There’s really nothing like the love of someone who gets you (even when you’re morbid and weird) ♥️ #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Happy Mother’s Day to my beautiful, brilliant mom, and to all the wise, clever, loving moms in my life and to all the moms throughout the eons, going back beyond the horizon of names and details we have to the earliest humans, to ancestors who lived in the trees and beyond. Think of all those links in that unbroken chain, all crucial for each of us to arrive at this moment. Thank you ♥️
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I know this day can be very hard for lots of reasons. But this is a picture of me with my brilliant mom, whom I adore. And also a portrait my sweet, funny daughter did of me at school with a tomato floating near by head because I love tomatoes very much. Happy Mother’s Day to anyone who tenderly nurtures any growing being 💛🍅

Sasha Sagan Instagram - I have been looking at the stunning new images from Mars for days, thinking, of course, about what my dad’s reaction might have been. But also, about something my mother often says: “you cannot lie your way to Mars”. It really never ceases to amaze me how unflinchingly following the evidence wherever it leads can make our species’ wildest dreams a reality. #perseverance
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Is this like wearing the t-shirt to the concert? 🍅🇮🇹
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Today calls for celebration (and believe me, at our house, we are!) but to everyone who has organized, volunteered, voted, called representatives, text banked, marched, worked for change, let’s keep going. There is still so much we must do to move toward that more perfect union. #inaugurationday 💙
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Don’t get me wrong, I do really love summer. And there’s definitely a part of me that’s sad to see it fading away. But even more than summer, I love that the seasons change, that nothing stays the same forever, that the world keeps turning.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Ahh, the Before Times! This photo was taken in May 2019 at the extremely fun birthday party of my dear and brilliant friend of many years @rebeljunemarie. Recently, I got to interview her —over Zoom, of course— for the new issue of @whalebonemagazine. We talked about memory, writing her unforgettable new book #survivingthewhitegaze (which comes out in February), and more. Thank you, lovely Rebecca 💙 link in story.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - She really fought the good fight in every way. May her memory be a blessing. And a call to action.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - It’s been a very difficult year, but I’ve been lucky to spend it with these two hilarious, loving, Instagram-shy, silhouetted figures. Today, we three are marking the winter solstice, joyful in the knowledge that no matter what else happens the days will start getting longer. The light will return. The particular movement of our planet around our star is both completely reliable and profoundly beautiful. And, I think, cause for celebration. Amazing how much splendor a little axial tilt can provide. Happy solstice, my friends (no matter your hemisphere) 🌞🌌🌍✨
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Kids today, always with the selfies.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Every single thing I wanted for my birthday all at once.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Ok I am extremely excited. I’ve been dreaming of making this podcast for ages and it’s coming out TOMORROW! Welcome to ‘Strange Customs’ from @onlyskymedia where I get to talk to the smartest, funniest writers, actors, historians, and scientists about how weird we humans can be. In each episode we’ll explore one of our brilliant, terrible, beautiful, antiquated, ingenious, elaborate, oppressive, poignant, elegant, ancient, modern, funny little rituals and traditions. Why do we do them? Where did they come from? And how would we explain them to a visitor from another world? Listen and subscribe, wherever you get your podcasts (link in bio) 🎧💙
Sasha Sagan Instagram - At my first job out of college I had a friend who left the office early every Wednesday to attend what I’ll call a “self-help group”. Thinking I was funny, I would say, “ok have fun at your cult meeting!” One day I saw the look on his face and realized how extremely rude I was being. I apologized and agreed to attend an introductory meeting to make amends, and I guess, to prove my open-mindedness. In the meeting for new potential members we had to go around and say why we were there. I only said a colleague had invited me. A brash, kind of obnoxious older man next to me was more honest. “I’m here because I’m trying to sleep with a gal I know who comes here.” Soon the person leading the conversation was asking more personal questions. “What’s the problem in your life you are battling? What do you need to change to move forward?” When it was my turn I was suddenly overcome with emotion. I couldn’t believe I was crying in this weird meeting surrounded by strangers. “My father died when I was young and I don’t know how I’ll ever get over it.” Before the leader of the meeting could finish saying that was just the kind of the thing they could help with, the older man interjected, “Just get married and have kids of your own and you’ll be fine”. I was like 23, definitely not ready for that. His advice felt aggressive and inappropriate. I never went back but I remembered that day. For many years Father’s Day was the worst day of the year for me, full of constant reminders of what I didn’t have anymore. Then 3 years ago my husband and I had our beautiful little girl and something did indeed shift. Suddenly the idea of fatherhood was about my husband’s kind, silly, thoughtful, tender relationship with her. Celebrating that gives me so much joy. I still miss my dad. I still wish he was here. But now I feel a new appreciation for the love and attention he gave me, and a sense of profound gratitude for all the great dads past, present and future. And today, overall, I feel very lucky. And astonished that unpleasant stranger was sort of right. If you’re reading this and you’ve lost your dad or your relationship is hard, please know I’m thinking of you ♥️ #fathersday
Sasha Sagan Instagram - There is something about this image, a cross section of the life of a leaf, that moves me. It’s so simple and poignant. I am thrilled that it happens to be the cover of the Korean edition of #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe, my very first foreign language translation 🌱
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Ding dong! ➡️ Hello! It’s me on @cosmosontv again playing my grandmother Rachel and feeling like a time traveler. Did you see me? 👵🏼🌌 #cosmos #cosmospossibleworlds

Sasha Sagan Instagram - Do I look a little nervous in this picture? Well, I am. The two lovely women I’m with host a very successful podcast called ‘That’s So Retrograde’. It explores and celebrates lots of things about which I am openly critical because they are not evidence-based: astrology, past lives, crystals. Back in October one of my lifelong besties @amyrosoffdavis brought @ssimbari and @elizabethkott to hear me talk at @booksoup. They were warm and enthusiastic and invited me to be on their show. I agreed immediately but some part of me worried that by accepting I’d be implicitly denying our deep philosophical differences, somehow endorsing their views. On the other hand, I didn’t want to cut myself off from an opportunity to communicate my perspective to people who might not otherwise hear it. So I went on @soretrograde. Stephanie and Elizabeth had read my book very carefully. They were inquisitive, extremely gracious and eager to hear my skepticism. That’s no small thing. So few people are open to hearing why you don’t believe what they believe. We had a truly great conversation and a lot of fun. I left very grateful to Stephanie and Elizabeth for this opportunity, (but also wishing I’d remembered to say “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence”). I don’t know if I’ll change any minds but I never want to be accused of only preaching to the (un)converted. There are so many people who see themselves as #spiritualbutnotreligious but never get access to a scientific worldview that’s joyful as opposed to cynical. Long story short, even if we don’t agree I want to talk to you and maybe even be friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, Stephanie and Elizabeth, for having me on your podcast ✨ The episode is out now and would love to know what you think.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Happy Valentines Day to the creatures of this dot. And happy 30th birthday to this photograph, which inspired what I consider one of the most meaningful poems ever written. I still hope this perspective can help make us understand how lucky we are to have one another on this tiny island in the great wide vastness. Let’s find a way to love each other here 💙 #palebluedot
Sasha Sagan Instagram - My dear wonderful dad would be 84 today. I find that very hard to imagine. I spend a lot of time wondering what he would be like as an old man. I wish I could know that version of him. Just as I wish I could know the version of him pictured here, young and full of promise. I miss all the versions of him. The ones I knew and the ones I didn’t. Thank you to everyone who knew him and everyone who didn’t who still misses him, who still reads his work, who still thinks of him. It means a lot. #carlsaganday
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Today is the day: MY BOOK IS OUT!!! It’s about science and rituals. Also falling in love and holidays and my parents and having a baby and death and religion and being secular and all the stunning grandeur of reality that requires no faith. And also sex and the encyclopedia. So if you like any of those things you might be interested. •
And I just have to tell you, I’m so grateful to so many who made this book possible, like my sweet husband and mom, my whole family, my besties, the MOST AMAZING colleagues, writers I admire who gave me very kind blurbs, and so many random people who probably don’t even know they helped me, like a singing cab driver in DC. Please read the acknowledgments if you have a chance, you might be in them! #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe #pubday
Sasha Sagan Instagram - There are so many layers of emotion wrapped up in Mother’s Day, motherhood, childhood, and just being a mammal, really. At the core of it all, I am just eternally grateful to have been brought into existence and then, later, to have been able to bring more people into it. Magic. Endless thanks today to all the generations, past and future, and especially my beautiful, brilliant mama and my sweet, funny babies 🩷

Sasha Sagan Instagram - Years before I became a parent I got into something of an argument with someone about civil disobedience and injustice. She said, “when it comes down to it you’ll want your kids to just follow the law”. I didn’t have any yet so I couldn’t be sure, but I remember thinking “no, I’ll want them to be like John Lewis”. And tomorrow when our daughter wakes up, my husband and I will tell her a very brave person we admired very deeply is gone but we can learn so much from how he lived his life 💔
Sasha Sagan Instagram - The mind-blowing, breathtaking, hope-filled new season of #COSMOS premieres Monday at 8/7c on @natgeochannel. I am so f*cking excited for you to see it. And so profoundly proud of my mama for creating this stirring, uplifting vision of the beauty of science. #cosmospossibleworlds #hope
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This picture really captures how these last few days in New York have felt. California, get ready, I’m on my way! #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe
Sasha Sagan Instagram - The wonderful @stephanielacava interviewed me about love and skepticism for the new issue of @thevioletbook and @daliaymakeup changed my life by parting my hair in the middle for the photos. Thanks so much to all involved, especially my dear @leithclark 🤎
Sasha Sagan Instagram - We have decided years end and begin at very particular times. Different cultures have different moments when the years change over and we give ourselves an appointed time to reflect and start anew. In many traditions these turning points take place in autumn or spring. But in the Gregorian calendar, the one that is most widely used on this planet, the new year begins nowish, winter in the northern hemisphere, summer in the southern one. It’s arbitrary but I’m grateful for a chance to feel time passing and process all the changes during the most recent revolution around the sun. It’s been a very exciting year for me. In no small part because I got to work with and meet so many interesting people. Thank you to absolutely everyone who helped make my book possible, everyone who read it, who wrote to me (I will do my best to reply if I haven’t yet, I promise!), came to my events or follows me here. I can’t wait to see what the future holds, no matter when it starts or what we call it. #happynewyear #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This cannot just be a one day thing that makes us feel like we’re doing something before we move on.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This astonishing, witty, sunshiny little human won’t be an only child for much longer. She is both excited and apprehensive about becoming a sister. Change is hard and getting a sibling is a very big change for a very small person. We’ve been celebrating her and doing our best to prepare her. We wanted to throw her a big party to congratulate her on becoming a big sister but, you know, pandemic. It does occur to me though that there should be more rituals around the rite of passage into siblinghood. Do you have any, personal or cultural? If not, what should those rituals be?
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Recently, while planning the online conversation I did with the lovely @michaelakalowski for the @brisbane_writers_festival I learned about an Australian ritual that I had never heard of before. Michaela taught me that at the beginning of events there is sometimes an “acknowledgment of country”, a show of respect for the particular Aboriginal clan whose land is being inhabited. It’s a brief but meaningful recognition of the people who lived there first and implicitly how it was lost through colonialism and imperialism. What if we did this in the United States? What if we spent just a moment before a conference or a concert forcing ourselves to face our history? What if we made ourselves talk about how this nation really came to be? What if before a session of Congress or an Oval Office address we as a nation acknowledged we are conducting our business, say, on the land of Nacotchtank in buildings built by the forced labor of enslaved people? How might that change our perspective and inform our decisions? I don’t know, but I’ll be thinking about it tomorrow while I re-read Frederick Douglass’s essay “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” on Nauset land. #fourthofjuly
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This weekend I had the pleasure of speaking at #ffrfcon2021, but the greater joy was learning so much from many of the other speakers. In particular the brilliant one pictured with me here!
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Happy Solstice, fellow Earthlings ✨I’m so grateful for that funny little axial tilt of ours and all the beauty and variation it bestows upon us. For those of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere, in all this present darkness, please don’t forget that “starting tomorrow the days will start getting longer again, and slowly the plants will bloom again, the sunshine will return. Summer is coming.” It is intrinsically wonderful. It requires no faith. And for eons, in one fashion or another, we’ve been celebrating it. 🕯🌌☀️#happysolstice #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This is the sign I’ve been using while protesting. This is what I believe. Tides do turn. Change is coming. Let’s keep going.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This beautiful work of art by @cedricsmithstudio makes me think of the heroic John Lewis and so many others who risked life and limb for this right. Don’t forget them today. #vote
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Thanks to the wonders of science and technology I made friends with a gifted artist who lives across a great ocean. She sent me this beautiful creation of a woman and one of the Voyager spacecrafts in the ocean of the universe. And somehow it all feels like a little poem about vast oceans and ways small creatures such as we find to send messages across them. 📡🌌🖤 Thank you @paulina.mocna, from the bottom of my heart, for this. #voyager
Sasha Sagan Instagram - We lost my dad 22 years ago today. When I say “we” I mean all of us. Not just me, not just our family. Because I truly believe that if he were still here, thinking, writing, debating, teaching our entire planet would be better off. I miss him terribly and I know a lot of you do too. Thank you to all of you who express your appreciation of his life and his work. It means a lot ❤️
Sasha Sagan Instagram - If you’ve read my book you know I am conflicted about Thanksgiving. I love the harvest-time gratitude ritual. I detest the nationalist mythology that omits the destruction of whole societies. So I’m posting about something else, something I feel altogether positively about: my book comes out in the U.K today!!! Something for which I am genuinely “#grateful”. So in honor of that here’s me posing in Trafalgar Square a million years ago for the pages of @lulaofficial. And yes, now that I’m looking at it I do realize the irony of being dressed vaguely like a pilgrim. #TBT #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This is Helena, wearing her great-grandmother’s hat. She is curious, gregarious, clever, and wonderful. It is such pleasure and privilege to travel this planet with her as we mark her fifth voyage around our star. Happy birthday to our beloved little wanderer 💛
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Thank you so much to @willwrights for inviting me write an essay for the gorgeous new issue of @atmos, a magazine with a fantastic mission. And thank you to @stefanie_moshammer for bringing it to life with the most breathtaking images. (Link in story). #hello
Sasha Sagan Instagram - If you read #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe you know what my Grandpa Harry meant to me. Today marks five years since his death. Tonight we will light a candle for him. #theonlysinwouldbetopretend
Sasha Sagan Instagram - There are few things that ignite as much excitement for me as traveling this world. These days, even revisiting places I have been and getting to see them through my children’s eyes makes it all feel brand new. Fresh awe and wonder at every turn, no nonchalance. All “chalance” as it were. It’s contagious. I can only imagine what it might be like someday for future families going on journeys to new worlds. I suspect that whatever else we humans might encounter and feel, we will wonder how we ever took this planet —with its ample air and generous liquid water, its astonishing array of flora and fauna, its endless beauty—for granted. What a gift we could give ourselves by looking around as though we’d never seen any of this before, with something like childlike astonishment at our great good fortune to be here right now. What better care we might be able to take of our world and one another by seeing it all through that lens. #earthday
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I record Strange Customs in my closet, sitting way too close to the computer, and even still it’s outrageously fun for me. Here’s a tiny little preview of what this season has in store for you. The first episode, featuring my dear friend @brandonkylegoodman, is out now!!! Find it, you know, wherever you get your podcasts ✨
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This is my grandmother Pearl, my mother’s mother. She would be 101 today. She was kind of impossible, frankly, and an unreliable narrator. But she lived to travel and wore false eyelashes everyday. And there was much else about her I loved. Whenever anyone in our family would fly across the country she would say, “Sacajawea!” It was a way of celebrating how quickly we’re now able to cross this continent thanks to the magic (brought to you by science) of air travel. A way of highlighting how lucky we were that it wasn’t the grueling journey it had been in the first years of 19th Century. Later, after she was gone, I thought what a credit it was to her that she didn’t say “Lewis & Clark!” instead.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Science reveals endless untold wonders worthy of celebration and awe.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This is my beautiful, hilarious, astonishingly brilliant mother on her 70th birthday today. She gave me life and she exudes it, loves it, celebrates it, every single day of hers💫
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I am so lucky I got to write this piece for @thevioletbook about the theater as a kind of secular church and the bonding nature of loss, through the lens of my friendship with this amazing, brilliant woman. Thank you, @lilyrabe @thevioletbook @leithclark. Beautiful photos by @victoriawill 🖤
Sasha Sagan Instagram - For those of us in a position of privilege, for those who do not live with the fear that any small daily interaction could lead to our murder because of the color of our skin alone, but who seek to understand and move this country toward meaningful change, may I recommend these two excellent books.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - We very much enjoyed a concerningly nice day today in Boston.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - My book comes out (with a slightly different subtitle) in Australia, New Zealand, India and other wonderful places tomorrow! Although it’s already tomorrow in some of those places... so today! 🎉 #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Thank you, @inverse! So excited to be included on your Future 50 list.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Really grateful to be here in my beautiful hometown on this #carlsaganday. I love and miss my wonderful dad and I know a lot of you do too. Thank you for keeping his flame burning. ♥️
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Happy to report that life as a 37-year-old mom is a lot more exciting than I imagined it would be when I was like 19. Thanks for all the birthday wishes yesterday, everyone ♥️
Sasha Sagan Instagram - A little behind-the-scenes from the final episode of #cosmospossibleworlds which airs tonight on @natgeochannel and depicts, as my mom would say, “a vision of the future we can still have”. (And yes that’s me as my grandmother Rachel one last time.) #cosmos #worldsfair #tunein
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I wrote this essay about how inevitable history feels when we learn it, how hard it is later to the capture the shock of the events that change our world. I wanted to call it “The Spoilers of War” when I typed out the first draft five and a half years ago. But in another way I think I started writing it twenty years ago today… #thespoilersofwar #linkinstory @literaryhub
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I had the best time with the brilliant astrophysicist @starstrickensf at @brooklinebooksmith last night. We only met in person yesterday but I could talk to Sarafina (about her excellent book ‘Starstruck’ or anything else) for hours. Instant buddies. The audience was very interesting and very engaged. After the event I had the chance to talk one-on-one with a number of people. I couldn’t believe how much emotion there was. So many people opened up to me, diving right into the deep end, my favorite place. They opened up about their grief, their childhood, their struggles to find their calling. It was so beautiful. I love emotion. We so often try to separate it from our scientific pursuits, as though one might taint the other. And sure, emotion can often cloud our understanding. We must be mindful of that, not convincing ourselves of things because we want them to be true. But as my parents’ work captures so elegantly, the grandeur, awe, and wonder that science evokes is among the most profound emotional experiences. And it’s all wrapped up in all the others: our fears, our joys, our mortality, the thrill of feeling alive. As Sarafina said last night, all you need to do is look at the latest images from JWST to feel it all.

(Shout out to @johntweak for this photo, thank you! And to everyone who came by last night including my bestie’s ex-boyfriend’s little brother who just happened by on his way home from the dispensary and wandered in!)
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I am very excited because I’m doing my first ever Instagram Live tonight with @celinecelines on @theslowfactory. We’ll be discussing the intersection of science and spirituality, something that feels especially relevant in this strange, scary moment we’re in. Come say hi ✨ #slowtalks
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I opened a cardboard box this morning and inside I found the last few years of work in tangible, lovely book form and then my heart exploded #galleys #bookstagram #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Here I am at the very moment I sat down to start writing my book. Only 12 more days until it comes out 🤗📄 #TBT #amwriting #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This whole time that I’ve been on here looking at your pictures I was supposed to be writing a book.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I love this picture of my mom so much. It was taken in 1966 on her first day at NYU. She had no idea what life had in store for her. She’s many years away from motherhood but I can tell in this picture that she is already my mother. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers, past, present, and future. And especially to my brilliant, beautiful one ♥️ #anndruyan
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I had THE BEST time tonight at my very first book tour event! Thanks so much to @porter_square_books & @cambridgepubliclibrary, and #gregepstein (who doesn’t have Instagram) for moderating. And most of all to everyone who came. I’m so pumped I get to do this all over the country! #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe
Sasha Sagan Instagram - I loved making valentines for my classmates when I was little. Choosing who got which one, filling them in, handing them out, opening the ones I received. One of many #strangecustoms I have taken great pleasure in all my life. This year, my daughter’s teacher asked the students not to address their valentines and just fill in the “from” section so they could be distributed more efficiently. So Helena took it upon herself to address each one with “I Love You” instead. The sweetness of it took my breath away. There are so many different ways to love one another and I’m for celebrating them all, on a cheesy holiday loosely related to a 3rd Century Roman clergyman and every other day of the year, too. 💌
Sasha Sagan Instagram - The totally finished hardcover copies of my book arrived and I am over the moon. They’re just so much prettier than I could have ever hoped! I’m very nervous and very excited for this baby to be out in world in just few short weeks. Really hope you like it ✨ #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe #bookstagram

Sasha Sagan Instagram - This week I got to do something I’ve been dreaming about for a long time. It was really hard. I stumbled. I mispronounced. I cried. But I got to tell my own story, in my own voice. And I am very grateful for that chance🎙♥️ #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe

Sasha Sagan Instagram - I’ve been on a whirlwind trip to Seoul for the last few days. It’s a beautiful, bustling metropolis and it has been a truly incredible experience. I was invited by the @thekoreaherald to speak at an event about humanity in tech, marking the newspaper’s 70th anniversary. During the event, they played a video about the paper’s history and circumstances under which it was founded in 1953 just after the armistice. The reporters from the newspaper’s early days talked about how wartorn, impoverished, and isolated the country had been. How they were sometimes the only source of information about Korea to the outside world. It moved me to tears. Seeing this modern city it seems unthinkable. And it gave me a great sense of hope for all the seemingly impossible better futures we yearn for.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - Tonight was so special. Thank you @zoe.kazan for being the most amazing moderator, with notes and quotes and brilliant questions. And thank you to @strandbookstore for having us, among the rare and beautiful books. I’ll never forget it. ❤️
Sasha Sagan Instagram - There are no words for how much I adore this woman, such a dear friend and one of the most fun people on earth to talk with about anything under the sun. Nicole, you were so wonderful and I was frankly overwhelmed by all the lovely things you said about the book — as evidenced by my facial expression in that second picture. Thank you, @nicolerichie for the most fun evening and the most interesting discussion. Can’t wait for our next one, even if it’s not in front of a room full of people at one of our very favorite bookshops. #forsmallcreaturessuchaswe

Sasha Sagan Instagram - During our last beach day of the year, my husband turned to me and said, “every time I see someone reading a book I think maybe when we come here next year we’ll see people reading your book”. And suddenly my faint melancholy for the ending of summer lifted and I found that I am unabashedly excited for this autumn.
Sasha Sagan Instagram - When I was a kid, my dad and I would sometimes leaf through the stamp collection he had amassed decades earlier in his own youth. Tiny old rectangles from around the world, all neatly organized, all revealing something important about the values and history of the nation that issued them. I thought of that this morning when I picked up these beauties at my local post office. The @uspostalservice is crucial, especially now as so many Americans must vote by mail in the midst of a pandemic. Dismantling the post office is voter suppression. See story for ideas on what how to help, (including buying awesome stamps 📬) #savethepostoffice #vote
Sasha Sagan Instagram - This is me last night with #danieldennett and #gregepstein on a panel about being secular for a philosophy class at Harvard called “Saints, Heretics and Atheists”.

Somehow this December 20th it feels especially hard, maybe due to the nature of this strange and painful year. I keep finding her face in mine. If you read my book you know I love and miss the two gentlemen in this photo, my dad and my Grandpa Harry, very much. (And also that I feel rather strongly about photo booths.) So #stayhome and maybe find some lost treasures.

Sasha Sagan - 2.2K Likes - At my first job out of college I had a friend who left the office early every Wednesday to attend what I’ll call a “self-help group”.

Sasha Sagan - 1.3K Likes - Recently, while planning the online conversation I did with the lovely @michaelakalowski for the @brisbane_writers_festival I learned about an Australian ritual that I had never heard of before.

For those of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere, in all this present darkness, please don’t forget that “starting tomorrow the days will start getting longer again, and slowly the plants will bloom again, the sunshine will return. #earthday

Sasha Sagan - 1.1K Likes - This is my grandmother Pearl, my mother’s mother.

I wanted to call it “The Spoilers of War” when I typed out the first draft five and a half years ago. But in another way I think I started writing it twenty years ago today… #thespoilersofwar #linkinstory @literaryhub

Sasha Sagan - 899 Likes - I had the best time with the brilliant astrophysicist @starstrickensf at @brooklinebooksmith last night.

Sasha Sagan - 727 Likes - I loved making valentines for my classmates when I was little. 💌
