My dear wonderful dad would be 84 today. I find that very hard to imagine. I spend a lot of time wondering what he would be like as an old man. I wish I could know that version of him. Just as I wish I could know the version of him pictured here, young and full of promise. I miss all the versions of him. The ones I knew and the ones I didn’t. Thank you to everyone who knew him and everyone who didn’t who still misses him, who still reads his work, who still thinks of him. It means a lot. #carlsaganday
Years before I became a parent I got into something of an argument with someone about civil disobedience and injustice. She said, “when it comes down to it you’ll want your kids to just follow the law”. I didn’t have any yet so I couldn’t be sure, but I remember thinking “no, I’ll want them to be like John Lewis”. And tomorrow when our daughter wakes up, my husband and I will tell her a very brave person we admired very deeply is gone but we can learn so much from how he lived his life 💔
We lost my dad 22 years ago today. When I say “we” I mean all of us. Not just me, not just our family. Because I truly believe that if he were still here, thinking, writing, debating, teaching our entire planet would be better off. I miss him terribly and I know a lot of you do too. Thank you to all of you who express your appreciation of his life and his work. It means a lot ❤️
If you’ve read my book you know I am conflicted about Thanksgiving. I love the harvest-time gratitude ritual. I detest the nationalist mythology that omits the destruction of whole societies. So I’m posting about something else, something I feel altogether positively about: my book comes out in the U.K today!!! Something for which I am genuinely “#grateful”. A night at the aquarium.
This painting, by the wonderful @bylaurabaran, is based on a photo my husband took of me in May of last year. We were half a world away. It was warm. And I was six months pregnant. Now it’s cold. Our daughter walks and talks. And that moment in the Mediterranean Sea seems like both yesterday and like the faint memory of a dream upon waking. I look at this painting every day and marvel at how impossible it is to grasp the passing of time.

I am conflicted about Thanksgiving. The holiday is based on a lie and a fantasy about how this country began. But a harvest-time celebration that ritualizes gratitude is beautiful. I don’t know exactly what to do with both of these ideas. But I do feel immense gratitude. And as my mother always says, “you don’t need to know who to thank, to be thankful!” #happythanksgiving?
