“And if the [Mississippi] Freedom Democratic Party is not seated now, I question America.” It has been 60 years since Fannie Lou Hamer and the MFDP were denied access to being seated as delegates at the DNC. it dishonors her legacy to deny a Palestinian American a place on the stage. there is one day left, and I pray the hearts of the decision makers we can’t see are convicted to do what’s right. The Polins, the Israeli-American family who tearfully compelled us all for a ceasefire as they spoke about their son Hersh being held hostage, said this: “In our Jewish tradition, we say kol adam olam, every person is an entire universe. We must save all these universes. In an inflamed Middle East, we know the one thing that can most immediately release pressure and bring hope to the entire region, a deal that brings this diverse group of 109 hostages home and ends the suffering of the innocent civilians in Gaza.” May the DNC hear their appeal, and see all the universes in us, allowing a Palestinian to speak from tonight’s stage. it is the very least. The very least. Edit: because I see some misunderstandings/info in the comments, I want to make sure we’re all working from the same set of facts: The Uncommitted movement does not want Trump to win—which is why they’ve been engaging with democrats and have specifically shared that VP Harris has been far more engaged and open. They did not specifically aim for Thursday-they’ve been trying for a min in good faith thru Democratic Palestinian lawmakers, hoping to give their base motivations to vote Harris based on democratic commitments. I, for one, value Palestinian lives and Black lives and want as many people as possible to feel like they can confidently vote for our VP. Uncommitted has not been publicly harassing Black people and chastising any of our support of Harris—and while I won’t demonize various people who have different strategies nor will I demonize Black folks who have been understandably frustrated by the actions of some, I want us to have the same facts. Because I’m not letting this psyop win. I need Kamala Harris to win.
Look at these Black girl champions teaching us how to be excellent *and* share power for a just world. What we’re not about to do is allow the noise to drown out the truth. The truth is, Kamala Harris is many things – intelligent, professional, Black and Indian, and qualified to run for the highest position in America. Now that’s we’ve established that, let’s focus on the things that really matter no matter what side of the aisle you’re on – the racial wealth gap, healthcare, women’s rights, minimum wage… Cousins, weigh in and tell us what matters to you in this election. #WeVoteBET
🤍 “Why I wear white” Today is Women’s Equality Day, which commemorates the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which—at least on paper—granted women the right to vote, back in 1920. The suffragettes back then wore white, as did many women last week on the final night of the Democratic National Convention. But as @mspackyetti says, wearing white has added historic significance for Black women, who were shut out of the vote for decades (and are still targeted most by voter suppression laws). She wears white despite the fact that “the Suffragettes wouldn’t have wanted my great-great-grandmother to don their monochrome uniform even though her tired hands built their beloved democracy for free.” Recorded at In Love and Struggle, 2020.
the @nytimes said “Joy is not a strategy.” I beg to differ. It’s easy to believe Joy isn’t strategic when you’ve never had to use it in battle. Joy is not the only strategy—but it is an essential one. And if you think it’s not, you just not be properly studying Black women. You dismiss joy because you dismiss us. You allow your confusion as to how we have survived and thrived through what you could never bear to take joy out of the equation when we never do. We are wise and rooted enough to know that this thing we have called joy—the world didn’t give it to us, and the world can’t take it away. So we hold on to it, daring you to steal it and defying your rules that we must deny it. Joy keeps spirits strong. Joy keeps soldiers marching. Joy sees hope in darkness. Joy finds light in community. Joy makes you independent of perfect circumstances and dependent on faith and works. Joy makes you keep working for the yes after a million no’s. You think Joy can’t exist in desperate circumstances—and you’d be wrong. Because Joy is the medicine that makes us well. Its contradiction makes it a powerful antidote. It binds together the late nights and early mornings and righteous anger and productive frustration and community repair and intensity of the moment and together births the things that heal us. Not a political party. Not a single candidate. Not even an electoral victory. It births the new chapters that we dare to write ourselves. Through our struggles and tears, our troubles and triumphs, our disappointment and our victories, J O Y in what has become and what will be because we make it so: that is what J O Y brings. I am so grateful to every single person who made a taxing week full of visible and invisible work for 5011 different jobs that pay and don’t, for me, a reclamation of the J O Y I have in the P R I V I L E G E of spending my days thinking of and working for the people, in the great and diverse lineage of Black womanhood, in the spirit of justice through and beyond systems. J O Y in the battle—because the battle continues. #DNC2024

Nothing about us should ever be decided without us. @BET was on the ground all week as @mspackyetti showed us what it’s really like to experience a DNC and what’s not often seen on primetime — our elders and ancestors who showed up, the expression in our threads, the pure joy of watching history in the making, and the promised polices we hope to be instilled with change. With election day only 74 days away, it’s imperative to take the time to reflect on what we’ve heard at these conventions, research your candidates, and know that YOU have the power with your vote. #WeVoteBET.
There are just 76 DAYS until the election. Do you feel like you know where candidates stand with the important policies? #BET and @mspackyetti are bringing democracy to your doorstep and encouraging you to hold officials accountable. Like Governor Wes Moore of Maryland said on day 2 “It’s wonderful that you’re Black, I need to know your agenda”. What policies do you want to see addressed tonight? #WeVoteBET
The protest and presence of Black women have changed politics since the days of Fannie Lou Hamer to the current historical ballot that Vice President #KamalaHarris holds. Like the voices of Mississipi’s Democratic Party that demanded a seat at the DNC over 60 years ago, may the continued voice, advocacy, fight that Black women have provided at DNC’s past, present, and future give us the representation they deserve. Keep following @mspackyetti at the DNC, continue the conversation using #WeVoteBET and tune into Black America Votes: BET News Presents The DNC TONIGHT at 9/8c on @BET!
