Today is Women’s Equality Day, which commemorates the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which—at least on paper—granted women the right to vote, back in 1920. The suffragettes back then wore white, as did many women last week on the final night of the Democratic National Convention.

But as @mspackyetti says, wearing white has added historic significance for Black women, who were shut out of the vote for decades (and are still targeted most by voter suppression laws). She wears white despite the fact that “the Suffragettes wouldn’t have wanted my great-great-grandmother to don their monochrome uniform even though her tired hands built their beloved democracy for free.”
