My people come from Missouri, and it is a wonderful place, but it is also a hard place. I have loved Cori Bush ever since I saw her in Knock Down the House, where, as a movement leader, she transformed her pain and anger after the killing of Michael Brown into a run for Congress. Heartbreakingly she lost, but then she did what too few other people have the strength and vision to do — she ran again. And this time she won. Her time in Congress as a member of the squad has been marked by raw compassion and throwing down the gauntlet on the issues she often experienced herself and came to Congress to address. Having known what it was like to live in a car with kids in tow, she refused to leave Washington mid-pandemic, choosing instead to spend the night on the Capitol steps after Congress failed to extend an eviction moratorium. And seeing the senseless, devastating bloodshed happening in Gaza, she was a bold and brave early sponsor of a ceasefire resolution, fighting unapologetically to stop the US taxpayer funded slaughter of innocent men, women and especially children in Palestine. Everything that Cori Bush represents has made her a top target of anti-abortion, anti-climate, anti-justice Trump mega-donors who have used Israel as a wedge issue to funnel record amounts into defeating Democratic members in Democratic primaries. Her loss is a tremendous loss for the people of Missouri, for the people of the United States, for the Squad and for Congress itself. But if there’s anything we know about Cori Bush it is that she doesn’t accept defeat when it is offered. She will never back away from a fight when she knows right is in her side. And I and so many others stand waiting and ready to support her in the next big battle just around the corner.
There are no words to describe the heartbreak amongst our Gilded Age family today. Our wonderful key makeup artist who does me and many others on set lost her kind, devoted and beautiful son, Kristoffer, in a terrible accident last night. Yesterday the world lost a giant—the great Bernice Johnson Reagon. She embodied the most potent combination of activism and artistry I can think of. Her voice had a majesty and power like few others. Her politics and faith were deeply intertwined and she always led with both. I have been a huge fan since the 1970s when I first discovered Sweet Honey in the Rock (the mesmerizing a cappella group she founded 50 years ago) of which she was the heart and soul. Only later did i learn and come to love her earlier musical work with Pete Seeger during 1964’s Freedom Summer, fighting for integration in the South. Her music is the music I return to again and again when I am looking to be inspired, have my spine stiffened or simply be transported to a place of joy. Rest in Power Ms Reagon. You were and are a North Star to so many of us. Thank you for your life and your legacy. ❤️
