I caught a smell of the lady’s bag In a crammed tram on the way to school.
People stacked on people.
Freezing in Moscow winter, glued together on the way to work.
A mass of nothingness in the eyes except hunger.
A kid in front of me had a torn and worn-out sock.
I noticed,
a piece of over processed ham in the ladies bag like it was the biggest wonder.
I have been opening our empty fridge so many times in the last two weeks I forgot the number
Only a bag of oats and a bag of sugar
That all we had that winter month
I told my mom it’s all good , I tried to reassure her
How many dishes can you come out from sugar :
Lollipops, sprinkled plate , gowy melted on an old fry pan
Then redried with a half-working falling apart fan
Oats well cooked , medium , rare , overdone with a flair
I smelled that lady’s ham in the bag
I wanted to ask her for a piece so I can give to my mom and brag
In a cramped winter Moscow tram I asked her just that
She said she would have given me a piece but its all packed
Maybe next time
When I wait in a two hour line
There will be left a piece of ham
And me to i would hide it in a bag
Hoping not to be found or smelled ,
On a mission to bring a piece home, eyes on the prize and on track
I sighed , said damn
I got of the tram
