Gloria Steinem Instagram – One of my earliest profiles was on the life and idiosyncrasies of James Baldwin, which @voguemagazine published in 1964. In life, he was a Presence. Even sitting dead still and thoughtful, he gave the impression of movement, of barely controlled energy. I interviewed him at a midtown restaurant when he was days away from opening his play on Broadway, Blues for Mister Charlie, loosely based on the murder of Emmett Till and dedicated to Medgar Evers, a friend of Baldwin’s.
