I Stand With Stormy! Stormy Daniels’ bravery and truth-telling expose grave abuses of power in this country. Despite this, she and her family are targeted with threats, intimidation, and systemic financial draining. Right now, there is a $600,000 judgement against Stormy for Trump’s legal fees from a case that was dismissed. Every dollar raised is an act of solidarity, not only with @thestormydaniels but with all who have been harmed or harassed for speaking truth to power. Link to support is in my bio. #WeAreAllStormy
I wrote The Nazi Connection for @ms_magazine over 40 years ago, though the words are as relevant as ever today. The power to make decisions about our own bodies is the first step towards democracy, so it comes as no surprise that authoritarian regimes resist our right to reproductive freedom.
Thank you @pioneerworks for revisiting this piece with me. For a limited time, you can hear me read it at the link in my bio.
On Sunday, Jacob Blake was attacked by seven police bullets in his back, and this crime was done in front of his children. Yet as I write this, the police officers involved have not been fired or even charged.
On Tuesday, Trump and his enablers chose to stand up and deny, once again, the undeniable reality of racism in this country.
Rebelling against injustice is central to our democracy. Protest is central to our democracy. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Faced with an example of American leadership that excluded more than half of our talent, Shirley Chisholm and Hillary Clinton showed us a different way. Now Kamala Harris is giving us a chance for democracy that includes everyone. Voting has always been “in style” for me but nothing will give me more joy than if we can Elect Kamala! #votingisinstyle
My paternal grandmother, Pauline Perlmutter Steinem, was the first woman to be elected to the Toledo School Board — and perhaps the first Jewish woman elected to any public office in the United States, even before women could vote nationally.
She ran on a coalition ticket with the Socialists and the Anarchists, and got elected by organizing women to go to vote together. Women were kept away from the polls by gangs of mens and boys who would harass them if they came to vote. So she organized women to go in a group.
But I didn’t know any of this until a feminist historian wrote a monograph about her. What survived as admirable in the family history was that she was a great cook, that she had four sons, that she kept a kosher table, that she was an educator. I didn’t hear about the more rebellious parts.
I am thinking of her today, and the work yet to be done.
For women especially, democracy begins with the right to decide the future of our own bodies, yet an anti-choice majority of Texas state legislators are depriving women of this basic right. Though the huge majority of Americans and Texans believe that reproductive decisions should be made by women and our physicians, not by politicians, only a turn-out at the polls in the upcoming elections can bring back democracy – including the representation of Texas in the U.S. Senate.
Meet some of the women banding together to ensure reproductive rights and access to healthcare, protect the rights of DACA recipients, and to end the cruelty of family separation at the border.
Together, you and I can help them flip the Texas House and a U.S. Senate seat Democratic at last on November 3rd.
I am proud to support each and every one of them. You will be, too.

I met someone even older than me who is still working! At 96, Marilyn Maye is a wonder. Thank you for a night of music and fun!
Every child in the United States has the right to a free public education. Delivering on that promise – which is enshrined in the Constitution – isn’t possible unless teachers are paid a living wage.
Yet in Arizona, a Republican state legislature has systematically ignored the basic needs of teachers by severely under-funding the state’s education system. Just to survive, teachers are forced to take roommates and second and third jobs – and to march in the streets to make these conditions heard.
Meanwhile, shootings are the leading cause of death for young people in Arizona, yet the state legislature continues to be owned by the gun lobby.
In reality, this moment of economic hardship would be the perfect time to offer a little money to everyone who turns in a gun, and then to melt those guns down into playground equipment or anything that would actually benefit children. Remember, no other democracy in the world worships or allows guns as we do.
Now, Arizona has a chance to become a safer and more livable state because these candidates are running to represent you with empathy, courage, and action.
@coral4az The Mayor of Flagstaff and a third generation Arizonan fighting restore education funding, advocate for small businesses, and empower local communities to drive policy decisions.
@frenchforaz A retired U.S. Army Colonel, medevac helicopter pilot, and registered nurse advocating for government accountability, affordable healthcare, sustainable jobs, and fair wages for educators.
@ajforarizona A naturalized U.S. citizen and small business owner passionate about giving others the same opportunities he received by funding and reforming the public school system, protecting family-owned businesses, and expanding voting rights and health care access.
@captmarkkelly An astronaut, engineer, and former U.S. Navy captain (and husband to the incredible Gabby Giffords) dedicated to women’s rights, veteran protections, and common sense gun laws. He is running to unseat Martha McSally.

Dorothy Pitman Hughes’ time was too short. But, you’d never know it: from creating the West 80th Community Childcare Center, an innovative and ahead of its time multiracial childcare center, to Harlem’s first bed & breakfast, nothing stopped her.
I have been lucky to call Dorothy a friend and lifelong co-conspirator. She encouraged me to speak in public, and we spent years traveling across the country. Her devotion to children’s welfare, racial justice and economic liberation means that she left the world in a better place than she found it.
Ever since I met the artist @jillplatner I’ve admired her designs and generosity. She helped me add “Jewelry Designer” to my resume when we created a ring together, and she sells those rings to fundraise for reproductive freedom.
For my 90th birthday, Jill and her team designed the Steinemite Keychain. It reads “Adventure beyond every open door!” Proceeds benefit @gloriasfoundation which I recently established to preserve my home and archives for present and future organizing. It is a symbol of the fact that you are opening the door to our future!

The first campaign of my life was that of Adlai Stevenson for President. It was my senior year of high school, and once I experienced that campaign office, I was hooked. As we approach our upcoming Presidential election, hopefully where we will elect our first woman President, I am revisiting some of my past political writings. I hope you are as amazed, inspired and energized by them as I have been. Sign up to receive these writings in your inbox at the link in my bio. Photo: 1977 National Women’s Conference. I recently got to sit down with @officialjld to talk about feminism, laughter, and aging! You can listen to our conversation on @wiserthanme, out now.
Thanks to @exponent_org I was able to meet Juliette, aged 6, at a talking circle in my living room. Juliette prepared questions and even folded her reporter’s papers in the same way I learned to from my own mother, who was a great journalist in Toledo!
“What It Means To Be A Democrat” – when I originally wrote this essay in 1992, it was a statement. If I were writing it today, it might be a question. I never published this piece at the time, but it feels just as current as it did then. Read the full essay via Substack at the link in my bio. Photo by Horst and featured in House & Garden, 1970.
One of my earliest profiles was on the life and idiosyncrasies of James Baldwin, which @voguemagazine published in 1964. In life, he was a Presence. Even sitting dead still and thoughtful, he gave the impression of movement, of barely controlled energy. I interviewed him at a midtown restaurant when he was days away from opening his play on Broadway, Blues for Mister Charlie, loosely based on the murder of Emmett Till and dedicated to Medgar Evers, a friend of Baldwin’s. As Baldwin said of his writing: “The writer doesn’t choose his material. It chooses him.” On your 100th birthday and just past my 90th, I couldn’t agree more.
More than anyone I have ever met, my friend Victoria Jackson is living proof of this truth: We cannot control what happens to us, but we can use what happens to us. Her newest book, We All Worry, Now What? is a field guide to building self-esteem and creating an enriching life, even in the face of crisis. There is no better person to learn these invaluable lessons from. Add it to your shelf too. We All Worry, Now What? is now available for preorder on Amazon.
