Delivering on that promise – which is enshrined in the Constitution – isn’t possible unless teachers are paid a living wage.  Yet in Arizona, a Republican state legislature has systematically ignored the basic needs of teachers by severely under-funding the state’s education system. Just to survive, teachers are forced to take roommates and second and third jobs – and to march in the streets to make these conditions heard.  Meanwhile, shootings are the leading cause of death for young people in Arizona, yet the state legislature continues to be owned by the gun lobby.  In reality, this moment of economic hardship would be the perfect time to offer a little money to everyone who turns in a gun, and then to melt those guns down into playground equipment or anything that would actually benefit children. Remember, no other democracy in the world worships or allows guns as we do.
