Jennifer Ashton Instagram – Many women are told that they have an ovarian cyst, but what does that actually mean? What questions should be asked/ what information is needed to make a plan for follow-up/ treatment? In gynecology, we don’t consider something to be a “cyst” unless it is 2.5cm or larger. Smaller than that, it’s considered a follicle. In general, 2.5-4cm is considered small, 4-7cm is considered medium size and 7cm is considered large. Most small cysts resolve spontaneously in pre-menopausal women. Medium to large size cysts are at risk for torsion, which is a twisting of the ovarian blood supply, and is considered a surgical emergency. Cysts can be simple or complex, and can also be seen in women with endometriosis. In early pregnancy, a corpus luteum cyst occurs which is a normal finding. There is also a benign cyst called a sermons cyst, which contains teeth and hair! Here’s ovarian cysts 101 in under 120 seconds👍🏼(but there’s a lot more about cysts that will be in next week’s AJenda!)
