Today is a GREAT day – I feel a huge sense of happiness, relief and contentment inside ❤ The Ahousaht and the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and the BC NDP government announced the official protection of 76,000 hectares of Clayoquot Sound in various conservancies – an area about the size of Manning Provincial Park. This would be the largest protected areas victory for old-growth temperate rainforests in BC in almost two decades (since the various conservancies were announced in the Great Bear Rainforest and Haida Gwaii in 2006). This important milestone which includes support for sustainable economic development in the communities is thanks to the First Nations leadership and community members, with support from the BC NDP government, the federal Liberal government and conservation groups particularly Nature United over many years. Undoubtedly the Ahousaht and Tla-o-qui-aht vision here will inspire other communities across BC and Canada seeking to protect the ecosystems that support their cultures, economies and well-being!
