I was thinking of when I first met Kamala Harris, we had landed in a photo shoot for Oprah’s Power List. (I was curating at MoMA and had just been put up for a position in Washington). Getting 20 women camera ready meant hours to talk while getting done up. I listened to hear, watched her, and learned from her. And I loved her converse (not pictured in this shot. Tyler Mitchell got that right years later). What I saw that first day has made me smile for years as she had lead us. I’m so inspired. #Harris2024
The Unseen Truth coming out next month has let me dip back into the launch of my very first book The Rise with so much joy and gratitude for the amazing surprises. The first was launching it at Sundance with Robert Redford, Joey Soloway, Dave Eggers, Charles Limb, and more. The panel was about the gift of failure in the creative process. (The video failed to play. It was the headline on the event at Deadline. A wink from the universe. I am so grateful to Sundance.

Wow…! Yesterday, the first title in our new Vision & Justice Book Series, Race Stories: Essays on the Power of Images—a collection of award-winning short essays by Maurice Berger that explore the intersections of photography, race, and visual culture—was at #1 yesterday in its category on Amazon. And it is not out until late Fall 2024. I hadn’t planned on sharing much about this book until later this summer. But this surprise is too sweet not to! This is a season for work and miracles. Maurice Berger, we love you and miss you so much. We need your words to live on. And they will. I’m so honored to be the coeditor of this series with Leigh Raiford and Deborah Willis. Marvin Heiferman with Denise Wolff did such a fantastic job editing this volume. Thank you to everyone at Aperture, the Gordon Parks Foundation, Agnes Gund, and Darren Walker in particular, who believed in supporting Vision & Justice and who along with Aggie, offered such generous Ford Foundation funding this new initiative. Pre-order link in bio. (And Aperture is a non-profit publisher!) Courtney R. Baker, Dawoud Bey; LeRonn Brooks, Jelani Cobb, Teju Cole, Huey Copeland, Vinson Cunningham, Awol Erizku, Cheryl Finley, Nicole Fleetwood, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Michael B. Gillespie, Rujeko Hockley, Tyler Mitchell, Valerie Cassel Oliver, Richard Powell, Antwaun Sargent, Ming Smith, Salamishah Tillet, and Carrie Mae Weems.

Let America Be America Again, Langston Hughes wrote, and I’ve heard so many cite Hughes’s great poem in the past few weeks. It is up to us. And what an extraordinary set of people we are. I’ve been reflecting with about the clarity, love, and empowerment that came from fellowship these last few weeks. I’m so excited about where we can go together. “O, yes, I say it plain, America never was America to me, And yet I swear this oath— America will be! …. We, the people, must redeem The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers. The mountains and the endless plain— All, all the stretch of these great green states— And make America again!”

Joy everywhere in every thing! Hank Willis Thomas and I had so much fun speaking at Aspen Ideas Festival about his work and my forthcoming book The Unseen Truth. Thank you to all of the great, passionate folks at @aspenideas for creating this space for reflection, rigor, and love. Thank you to the ones who make that possible like Mel and Adam Lewis in particular, who personally made this session more meaningful than Hank and I could have imagined!
“From the ancients to our forefathers to our modern-day achievement-obsessed culture, the question of what makes us happy continues to perplex. Why are we eternally fascinated by the pursuit of happiness, and will we ever agree about what makes us truly happy?” Loved being on this Aspen Ideas Festival panel about happiness with Jeffrey Rosen, David Brooks, Tamar Gendler, and Adam Gopnik. #aspenideas
