Billy Jensen Instagram - Where I’ve been.
158 days sober. Working the steps. Much work to do.

Billy Jensen Instagram - My mom passed away last night.

Her three children were at her side.

Ten things about my mom I wanted to share.

1. Ann Linda Jensen had kids young — starting at 17 with Cori and 19 with Stacie. I came a bit later.

2. She was a singer in a band called The Mellow Wives that played bars in Rochester NY singing Carol King covers.

3. She loved horses and working at the race tracks in NY. She particularly loved working at Saratoga in August. She also taught large animal care at BOCES.

4. She got her masters later in life and became a guidance counselor at West Hempstead high school, and loved getting kids into their dream schools. I found a ton of recommendation letters she wrote for her students.

5. She had 6 grandkids. Will, Zoe, Grayson, Logan, Claire and Lily.

6. She had a close circle of friends in Jupiter, Fl. And loved her dog JoJo immensely.

7. She loved crafts and making jewelry.

8. She loved a good laugh.

9. She was fiercely independent and never wanted to be a burden for anyone.

10. She was always there for me.

In lieu of flowers, call your mom if she is still with us.

Billy Jensen Instagram - Pets are life. They run and jump and flop around and have no idea what their tiny moments do to our hearts and our hope. Dogs. Cats. Lizards. Doesn’t matter. They are transformative mental health wizards.

Today I’m 7 months sober. I’m a newbie still working steps and have so few answers and a long way to go. But I’ve been seeing and talking to a lot of people working dry January and thinking about going year round. If you do, get a pet.

When you lose alcohol or drugs, you lose the thing you might have relied on for years to push aside intrusive darkness each day and night. Depression, OCD and su@3cide ideation— the welcome temporary relief was there but it was also killing you. And it still can pound you into the ground. Luna is a tiny goofy spark of light for me each day. So a pet. A pet and therapy and meds and meetings if that’s your thing and milkshakes and fizzy drinks and sunshine. Let me know what works for you.

And as this is Instagram, there are some amazing mental health and recovery accounts to follow. @fightthroughmentalhealth @bekindmentalhealth @theocdtherapist @talkclubuk @fucking_sober @muppet_recovery @obsessivelyeverafter
are some of my favorites. #Sobriety #recovery #process #ocd #dryjanuary #hope #desertDogs #Sober #7months

Billy Jensen Instagram - My mom suffered a massive brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital this weekend. We all grabbed red eye flights to Florida Saturday night for a Mother’s Day visit we should have done anyway but she never wanted any fuss. I’ve written so much about my Dad, but my mom is the rock—always there. Being a den mother for cub scouts. Taking me to Star Wars 10 times in the theaters as a kid. Helping me get into college. Every drs appointment, dentist appointment. Every meal. The things that were just there that I took for granted. And she never ever wanted to be dependent on anyone. I collected these pics and was going to write something about her just always being there and celebrate her amazing hair styles for Mom’s day, especially as we have been bonding over 12 step.
But now this. Sitting in her room, praying with the priests and deacons as they come by her bed. Trying to stir up energy in the universe.

Billy Jensen Instagram - My Dad died 24 years ago today. He was 50. I turn 50 in August. Pretty soon I’ll have spent more time on this earth without him than with him. And yet it feels like this picture was taken yesterday.

This is us at Disney World. I’m maybe 12. We are at the Contemporary Hotel and he wanted to get Space Mountain and Cinderella’s Castle in the background of the shot from this Polaroid camera selfie.

Dad always wanted to get pictures of us together and I could never understand why. I was always like—“but the sunset looks better without us in it.”
Now I understand.
Billy Jensen Instagram - I am officially 1 year sober. 365 days of hugging the cactus, and a lot more to go. 🌵

Getting a tattoo in the same building I checked into for rehab a year ago. (Also got a haircut :)

Billy Jensen Instagram - Today is my Dad’s birthday. He lived 50 years and 132 days. As of 1pm eastern time today, I have lived 50 years and 132 days. Today is the day I have outlived my father. I didn’t think that would happen. When a parent dies younger, it kind of puts you on a timer, or at least it did me. God has a strange sense of humor to put that day on his birthday.

Last year, I was walking down the steps and for a split second I thought “I need to check in with dad.” In that split second, it felt so real, like he was still here. Then I remembered. Grief doesn’t end after year one. It ebbs and flows. And sometimes when you least expect it, you get hit with a wave that almost knocks you out of the f’n boat. Happy Birthday Dad. Wish I was giving you a wallet from Sears today like every year:
You fought back demons, could turn any rundown house into a masterpiece with the wave of a brush and always went out of your way to make others happy.
Give ‘em a little hell up there or a little heaven down below.

Billy Jensen Instagram - Two big questions while doing press on the arrest of the Long Island Serial Killer. There is the biggest—has he killed others (not just the 6 other victims found along Ocean Pkwy)? But I also keep coming back to the second big question: Why did it take 12 years for police to make an arrest when it seemed like all of the pieces were right in front of them? It’s not about pizza crust. It comes down to the Amber Costello investigation.

Amber worked as a sex worker who used to also roll some of her clients. She would invite a john to her home, and then her “boyfriend” would interrupt their meeting. They would get the money from the john, who would then slink away.

According to court documents, a client arrived around Sept. 1-2, 2010 at Amber’s house in Amityville. She and her “boyfriend” commited the ruse, then client left. He was described as a large, white male, around 6’4’ to 6’6” in height, in his mid-forties, with “dark bushy hair,” and “big oval style 1970’s type eyeglasses.” And he drove a dark, first generation Chevy Avalanche pick up truck, which has a distinctive plastic triangle design in between the cab and the payload.

The next day, a burner cellphone that had been communicating with Amber sent a text message stating, “That was not nice so do i [sic] credit for next time.” The message was sent from Massapequa Park (where Heuermann lived).

Later that day, Amber was contacted by the same burner phone. He told her he wanted to see her, but wouldn’t come back to the house.

Later that night, Amber walked out of her house and down the block apparently to meet the john and was never seen again.

This seemed like an incredibly good lead. Police should have been looking for all the owners of dark, first generation Chevy Avalanches. And then cross referenced that list with men 6’4” and up. They could have then shown photos to the friends of Amber’s to positively identify the john. They also had the taunting calls from the killer coming from Massapequa Park.

The current admins deserve props for putting this all together, but what were previous administrations doing?

Billy Jensen Instagram - This is my mom’s dog, Jojo. They say owners start looking like their dogs, but how about their owner’s sons? I’m totally biting her style.
Mom loved this dog so much and she is in good hands with the fam. Thank you so much to everyone who sent kind words, prayers and positive energy over the last few weeks. 🖤
Billy Jensen Instagram - A little blue steel, but it only took four tries to tie my tie right, so I’m going with it. CrimeCon 2022. Our Unraveled: Long Island Serial Killer panel was standing room only in the big room, and we had an amazing dinner with the Discovery Plus/Investigation Discovery team. And everyone here is super nice!

Billy Jensen Instagram - Happy Mother’s Day to the woman who took me to see Star Wars in the theater 10 times and let me dress any way I wanted. Love you, Ma. I think us kids turned out pretty good. I would tag my sisters but they threatened me with death if I tagged them. The 80s weren’t my fault.

Billy Jensen Instagram - Six years ago, I travelled to Ohio. Two best friends, Danielle Green and Lindsey Maccabee, had gone missing and their bodies were found in fields outside of Columbus.

I went to their house and met their third best friend, Cici. Cici was also a sex worker. I asked her if it gave her pause to get into another car. She said yes, but I have to, because I’m a drug addict.

I couldn’t shake what Cici said and it was in that moment I started looking into more crimes in the area.

Their families let me into their lives to tell the stories no one else was telling. And what I found were 18 unsolved cases missing and murdered women in a small area and an epidemic of addiction.

Six years later, the book Killers Amidst Killers is available for pre order.
now on Amazon and Audible in the link in my bio above.

Part of the proceeds from this book will Lindsey’s family for a headstone for her, and to Danielle’s daughters (via Lindsey’s brother Stacy and Danielle’s father Scott).

Billy Jensen Instagram - New True Crime Book available now in print and audio book: “Killers Amidst Killers: Hunting Serial Killers Operating Under the Cloak of America’s Opioid Epidemic”.

From Publisher’s Weekly starred review: “Jensen (Chase Darkness with Me: How One True-Crime Writer Started Solving Murders) asks a lot of questions but gets few answers in this thought-provoking and disturbing examination of how serial killers could have operated unsuspected in areas of Ohio ravaged by the opioid epidemic during the 2010s. Factors include poor record keeping, unshared information (so that the m.o. of a murder in one county might remain unknown to investigators in a neighboring county), and lack of public concern about the lives of the victims, who were typically impoverished, abused, and addicted sex workers. Jensen gives the victims a vital presence through the voices of the loved ones they left behind. In particular, he focuses on the heartbreaking stories of two Columbus sex workers, best friends Danielle Greene and Lindsey Maccabee, whose bodies were found within a month of each other in 2017. As he seeks to identify the women’s killer or killers, he lays bare the devastation wrought by a system that delivers unequal justice for people deemed marginal by American society. Jensen also discusses the sad cases of 30 other women who either went missing or were murdered. Not just true crime buffs will want to check out this impassioned cri de coeur.”

Not going to lie, I googled “cri de coeur.” Cry of the heart indeed.

Billy Jensen Instagram - Do you have plans tonight? Now you do:—a double dose of true crime investigative TV.

Launching tonight on Discovery : “Unraveled: Once a Killer” Alexis and I uncover the most dangerous type of killer out there—the one and done sexual thrill killer. Men who kill in such a manner that every expert thinks he must be a serial offender, but then he blends back into society, never to kill again. It happens way more than you think—And like in our story, the killer might be DJing your kid’s next school dance.

THEN:

Premiering Tonight at 9/8 on Investigation Discovery--“Unraveled: Toxic Testimony.” If you think you can trust forensic experts in murder trials, this show will open your eyes. David Camm came home from a pickup basketball game to find his entire family murdered. A blood spatter “expert” declared Camm was the killer. He went to jail for years, and you will be yelling at your television set when you find out why.

David Camm came home from a pickup basketball game to find his entire family murdered. A blood spatter “expert” declared Camm was the killer. He went to jail for years, and you will be yelling at your television set when you find out why.

Billy Jensen Instagram - This is Juan Vidal. His killer, who I wrote about in Chase Darkness with Me (“El Monte Jack in the Box Killer,” which I helped solved with LASD via tips from geotargeted social media posts) was sentenced this week to life in prison. It took 7 years but it finally happened.

In 2016, Juan was working at a Jack in the Box in El Monte, CA when in a man in a Halloween mask walked into the store, hopped over the counter and shot him. Through tips he was later identified as Louie Herrera.

Juan, the man his mother Mary called “Boo,” was only 25 years old.

From his friend Hector: “Juan was a true friend you could count on to drive out with almost no gas to help you when your car broke down. A guy that would call in sick to take his grandma to the store. A guy that would go on his lunch hour and take his mom food or cigarettes so she could be comfortable. A guy that would loan you his paycheck so that you could buy an old muscle car. A guy that would do anything to spend time with his friends and family. A hard worker that feared no type of job. He was the friend that always called you out when you were wrong or when you were doing something wrong.”

From a friend who wished to remain anonymous: “He loved his cats and his dog Molly. He was also a bit fearless. He would speak up and stand up for himself or friends at any moment. That’s something that was cool about him, how real he was with you. Very transparent. I remember when I would be sad we’d talk more philosophical. One of his deepest thoughts about life was “what lead me here?” Like what was a pivotal decision that lead [me] to this current situation. It makes one hyper aware of how small any choice you make, it still holds the power to shift things in big ways. He didn’t show it, but he was a deep thinker. He showed it more when he was trying to cheer me up.”

Rest In Peace, Juan Vidal.

Billy Jensen Instagram - The day Prince died, this man and I shared a hug and never saw each other again…until today.
Eight years ago, we were both crying after he performed a 20-minute rendition of “Purple Rain” on a corner in Chinatown (Swipe to watch). This morning, I was playing hockey in front of the White House when I heard a familiar wail, this time over Hendrix’s “Wind Cries Mary.”

I skated up to him, we chatted, and sure enough, it was the same guy! Josh Blocker is his name. He shreds. @joshblockerofficial.

Life is awesome sometimes.

Prologue: Mothers and Daughters

“Every story about a dead woman starts with her body. Elizabeth Short. Nicole Brown. Mary Jane Kelly. I don’t want to do that. I want to start with anything but her body. Anything. Lindsey Maccabee deserves that. She deserves to not be defined by her death. I want to start with life. Because that is what they take away…”

Billy Jensen Instagram - When a true crime story became part of the Trump hush money saga.

I was pretty excited to be featured in Men’s Journal for solving murders with social media (this was before the books). But when I got the magazine, which always has a moody male actor or athlete on the cover, I was confused—as was every other reader. I would later learn the cover was part of the contract in the catch and kill Donald Trump allegedly worked with American Media. Before the election in 2016, AM bought former Playboy Playmate Karen Mcdougal’s life rights for $150k—which meant she couldn’t openly discuss her alleged 2006 affair with Trump. Macdougal later sued to get her rights back, claiming they only bought the rights to kill the Trump story. The two settled, under the conditions that they put Macdougal on this cover.
So that issue, which the edit team really did not want to publish, sold poorly due to reader confusion, is now part of American history in Trump’s bizarre hush money trial.

Thank you Rachel Maddow for the “Facebook detective” shoutout.
Billy Jensen Instagram - Thank you so much Emily for making and gifting me this amazing Sherlock Hemlock!

Emily (@axepersonified) creates amazing Muppets replicas. She asked which one I would want, and I thought about the Newsman, Reporter Kermit, and of course, Super Grover. But in the end, she bestowed upon me Sesame Street’s original detective, Sherlock Hemlock. Perfect.

Who’s your favorite muppet?

The Muppets mean a lot to me. My mom and I used to watch the Muppet Show together every Monday night, and we later bonded over Emmet Otter when Dad was in the hospital over Christmas.
Sherlock was voiced by the great Jerry Nelson, who also was The Count, Lew Zealand (the most deranged muppet in history) and Emmet himself.

In honor of Jim Henson and the new doc, and say to you all “Egad!”

Please look at Emily’s page. She has made so many amazing characters. So many random ones. Taylor Swift as a Muppet and Crazy Harry are my two faves.

Billy Jensen - 12.3K Likes - My mom passed away last night.

Billy Jensen - 11.1K Likes - My mom suffered a massive brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital this weekend.

Billy Jensen - 10.3K Likes - My Dad died 24 years ago today.

Billy Jensen - 8K Likes - Today is my Dad’s birthday.

Billy Jensen - 5.5K Likes - Two big questions while doing press on the arrest of the Long Island Serial Killer.

Police should have been looking for all the owners of dark, first generation Chevy Avalanches. And then cross referenced that list with men 6’4” and up. They could have then shown photos to the friends of Amber’s to positively identify the john. They also had the taunting calls from the killer coming from Massapequa Park. The current admins deserve props for putting this all together, but what were previous administrations doing? * * * #longislandserialkiller #gilgobeach

Billy Jensen - 5.5K Likes - Two big questions while doing press on the arrest of the Long Island Serial Killer.

Mom loved this dog so much and she is in good hands with the fam. Thank you so much to everyone who sent kind words, prayers and positive energy over the last few weeks. 🖤

Billy Jensen - 4.4K Likes - Six years ago, I travelled to Ohio.

Billy Jensen - 3.5K Likes - New True Crime Book available now in print and audio book: “Killers Amidst Killers: Hunting Serial Killers Operating Under the Cloak of America’s Opioid Epidemic”.

Billy Jensen - 3.1K Likes - Do you have plans tonight?

Billy Jensen - 2K Likes - This is Juan Vidal.

Pics of Juan, stills from the video surveillance, IDing the mask, his mom Mary at the press conference, the killer ID’ed, Juan’s 1969 Buick Skylark special, which he named Christine.

Caption : This is Juan Vidal. Billy Jensen - 2K Likes - The day Prince died, this man and I shared a hug and never saw each other again…until today.

Billy Jensen - 1.3K Likes - When a true crime story became part of the Trump hush money saga.

Billy Jensen - 1K Likes - Thank you so much Emily for making and gifting me this amazing Sherlock Hemlock!
