Mike Corey Instagram - My feet have widened and calloused. My mind has done the same. I’ve stopped wearing shoes and underwear. Sunscreen and deodorant. 3 Million years an ape. 100 years a consumer. I’ve learned to trust my body. Not TV commercials and advertising. I now question things more. Not because I don’t believe, but because I want to see if they do. They tell white lies through golden teeth, Sanitizer for my hands, Insoles for my shoes, pills for the pain, A fake plastic coating over the true human experience. We’re being sold the solution, after being sold the cause. Comfortable and convenient options for everything. We’re soft like the marshmallow we eat. 
Our mind and body have stopped trying. They only work as much as they have to. The solution is not easing the pain. It is pain. It is not curing to suffering, it is suffering. 

Neither can be avoided. Unfortunately it is the human condition. We’re a species given everything we’ve ever wanted and we’re more miserable than ever. 

Finding meaning in your pain and suffering is the only way to be free of it. Your body is an amazing tool. A weapon of mass adaptation. We just don’t give it a chance. So the next time you’re outside, take off your shoes and walk in gravel for a while. The next time you’re in sun, take in those beautiful rays without the sunscreen for a bit. The next time you have a meal, eat with your hands, maybe even forget wash them. Do these gently at first, it takes time.
 People ask me how I survive these expeditions, how I rarely get sick, and how I handle the hottest and harshest places on the planet.
 It’s because I trust my body. I test it all the time. Saunas, sun, earth, ice and sweat. Humans do have a superpower. A hidden ability that has allowed us to outcompete everything else in nature. It’s Adaptation, and for some reason, we are hellbent on destroying it. Like the callouses on your feet, the tan on your skin, your iron gut, or your bulletproof patience It does not come from comfort. It comes from challenge. Your superpower does not come from comfort.

Mike Corey Instagram - We cling on to our bodies and call them temples. We treat them like fine China, and place them on mantle. To admire, but never touch. Too precious to actually use. Its purpose unfulfilled. Let me tell you something. Your body is not a temple. Your body is a weapon. A weapon of mass adaptation. Capable of great things if it’s used, and it will easily forget if it’s not. 3 million years of evolution gave us a regenerating supercomputer, able to change itself to into whatever it needs to be. Faster, stronger or smarter… your mind will recognize the patters., your muscles strengthen and quicken, Your skin will callous and toughen for the task. We are made to endure the bumps and scratches, ink, scars and holes. They are lessons. Not just to remind our mind, but to remind our body of what it is capable of. Of what it can do when it is challenged. Not wrecking it is a waste of its purpose. Not beating it up makes it forgetful. It becomes brittle and frail. I don’t think I could ever trust anyone without a few good scars. What life have they lived? What grand adventures have they had? We confuse wisdom, thinking it’s earned with time. Wisdom is earned through experience, especially the painful ones. Humans learn best when it hurts. Kush with the Hadza 🇹🇿 Tea in Mauritania 🇲🇷 Tabacco in Turkey 🇹🇷 Ayahuasca in Peru 🇵🇪 Be it caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, or some local blend of “herbs & spices”. All people in all cultures smoke, drink, or inhale something to relax or something to get lifted. I’ve heard it’s to press mute on the voice inside. An attempt to live freely and honestly for a few brief moments while our egos are distracted. I’ve heard it’s to tune into the spirits of past and present. To gather wisdom to help the village. To speak to our ancestors. I’ve heard it’s for energy and motivation. To get the job done. To turn in the work on time. I’ve also heard it’s purely just for fun. I’m a full time adventure traveller. Mike Corey Instagram - Perhaps I was wrong… “Experiences over Possessions” is what I told myself for nearly a decade of backpacking. “Collect moments not things” was what I proudly said, trying to convince the world that material goods aren’t worth your money, and we should focus on travel and experiences instead. I realize now that the wisdom and passion of these words was rooted… somewhere dark. And most of your “strong beliefs” could be as well. One night with a rum and Coke, and a journal, I asked myself “Why am I so opposed to fancy things?” Why am I so avidly throwing words like “Fake and Shallow” at luxurious people, places, and things? My reaction seemed disproportionate. After all, if someone says “Pineapple isn’t for me” it’s fine. But if someone says “I hate anyone who eats pineapple” you wonder… what pineapple hurt you…? I found the root of evil when I asked myself this simple question… “Do you think you’re not worth it?” … A stain on the sheets I missed after a decade of cleanup. Not noticeable until it was pointed out. See, we have loud fears. Ones that scream at us: The fear of the ocean, the fear of public speaking. Malignant. They consume us in the moment, they deafen us. Then we have quiet fears. Ones you barely know are there. Benign. Not raising alarms. They make you say certain things, and act certain ways. They give you “strong beliefs” about things that don’t really matter. I still stand by my motto of “Experiences over Possessions”. They bring so much more value to life. But don’t use this idea a shield to justify why you don’t take care of yourself like I did. Look Good. Eat Well. Celebrate. You’re worth it. Just beware of these quiet fears. They are the hardest to fix. 🐉

We’re being sold the solution, after being sold the cause. Comfortable and convenient options for everything. We’re soft like the marshmallow we eat. 
Our mind and body have stopped trying. They only work as much as they have to. The solution is not easing the pain. It is pain. It is not curing to suffering, it is suffering. 

Neither can be avoided. Unfortunately it is the human condition. We’re a species given everything we’ve ever wanted and we’re more miserable than ever. 

Finding meaning in your pain and suffering is the only way to be free of it. Your body is an amazing tool. A weapon of mass adaptation. We just don’t give it a chance. So the next time you’re outside, take off your shoes and walk in gravel for a while. The next time you’re in sun, take in those beautiful rays without the sunscreen for a bit. The next time you have a meal, eat with your hands, maybe even forget wash them. Do these gently at first, it takes time.
 People ask me how I survive these expeditions, how I rarely get sick, and how I handle the hottest and harshest places on the planet.
 It’s because I trust my body. I test it all the time. Saunas, sun, earth, ice and sweat. Humans do have a superpower. A hidden ability that has allowed us to outcompete everything else in nature. It’s Adaptation, and for some reason, we are hellbent on destroying it. Like the callouses on your feet, the tan on your skin, your iron gut, or your bulletproof patience It does not come from comfort. It comes from challenge. Your superpower does not come from comfort.

I realize now that the wisdom and passion of these words was rooted… somewhere dark. And most of your “strong beliefs” could be as well. One night with a rum and Coke, and a journal, I asked myself “Why am I so opposed to fancy things?” Why am I so avidly throwing words like “Fake and Shallow” at luxurious people, places, and things? My reaction seemed disproportionate. After all, if someone says “Pineapple isn’t for me” it’s fine. But if someone says “I hate anyone who eats pineapple” you wonder… what pineapple hurt you…? I found the root of evil when I asked myself this simple question… “Do you think you’re not worth it?” … A stain on the sheets I missed after a decade of cleanup. Not noticeable until it was pointed out. See, we have loud fears. Ones that scream at us: The fear of the ocean, the fear of public speaking. Malignant. They consume us in the moment, they deafen us. Then we have quiet fears. Ones you barely know are there. Benign. Not raising alarms. They make you say certain things, and act certain ways. They give you “strong beliefs” about things that don’t really matter. I still stand by my motto of “Experiences over Possessions”. They bring so much more value to life. But don’t use this idea a shield to justify why you don’t take care of yourself like I did. Look Good. Eat Well. Celebrate. You’re worth it. Just beware of these quiet fears. They are the hardest to fix. 🐉
