Prentis Hemphill Instagram - For those needing the reminder that chaos isn’t always bad. It can serve us, it can open up possibilities if we can manage to stay grounded and focused on it.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Imagine the people who have loved you. The ones who have held you and allowed you to hold them. The ones who have taken you to account yet believed in your ability to change. Now imagine the ones who have loved them. And the ones who loved them too. We each exist in a constellation of love. For our species, it’s love that makes life possible.

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - There’s a frenzy that happens in these moments. The pit, the churning in my own stomach is panic, realizing that somehow I carried on each day underestimating the determination and depravity we face, the cruelty.

All I can say now is feel it. When you can and with others, face the fear of this unknown, this timeline unfolding. Shake and despair. And when you can, remember that we each and together are powerful, our commitment makes us more so. Our strategy is the path. Our action, our love. It’s not your panic that unnerves those opposed to freedom, but your dedication to what is bigger and more true than their fear.

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Seeing the cover of this, my first book, What It Takes To Heal, for the first time left me without the ‘right’ words to describe how I felt. For so long it was a little secret, this thing I created in quiet rooms and corners of spaces that felt safe enough to unlock stories that until recently I hadn’t wanted to revisit. In preparing to share this work, I’ve struggled to articulate my feelings. wondered ‘Is it good enough?’ ‘Is it what people need at this moment?’ Starting out I said that I wanted people to use the book as a resource as they identify their ‘healing home.’ But what I didn’t expect is that writing this book would help me move deeper into mine.

There’s something spiritual, revelatory, and terrifying about feeling, especially when those feelings are tethered to dreams that have become reality. I have always wanted to write a book. As a therapist and movement worker, books aid me in helping people unlock their emotions and access the types of healing that are necessary for them. I beat back my own fear and endeavored to write this book because I believe nothing is more courageous than feeling.

We’ve collectively lost so much and have experienced tremendous grief these past few years. But we’ve also dug deep, built new things, and transformed old things. We’ve found joy, strength, and curiosity during these, some of our hardest days. And it is my deepest hope that this book can be an accompaniment to those who are doing the work of shifting their internal conditions and the conditions of their communities to move closer to the healing, freedom, and safety we all deserve.

What It Takes To Heal is now available for pre-order, and will be out officially on June 4, 2024. Thank you to my family and everyone who has supported me on this journey, including my agent, editors at @penguinrandomhouse, and my staff. I’m beyond grateful to my team at @TheEmbodimentInstitute. And to my comrades, to everyone who is and has been a part of removing the stigma from feeling–making it something that is to be honored and not avoided— I say thank you.

I can’t wait to experience this next season of my work with you all.

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Are you healing or acclimating to conditions?
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Before my gender there was a perspective. A looking between and around. I made a pre verbal pact with myself to feel life as it comes not as it was dictated to me. And to never be afraid to change. This is what my transness is to me. Some might think that with all that is going on, all the anti-trans attacks that what is happening is about a small minority of people. It’s not. It’s about each of us. And whether or not we can envision relations that welcome us to really meet each other as we are. Or if we intend to continue with these performances and projections that police and endanger difference. There is an expression that is uniquely, beautifully you. I hope you allow it. I hope we celebrate and protect the ones who insist on being free. I hope we know how powerful and beautiful we really are. #transdayofvisibility #tdov

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Um so guess what? @brenebrown has a new amazing series on @hbomax for Atlas of the Heart and…Im in it y’all (😬). I’m talking embodiment, feelings, boundaries. Honored, excited, geeked to be a part of this project. And grateful to share how embodiment makes it more possible to be who we actually are, living the values that really matter to us. Check out the series, you gonna learn something and support your boy!

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Trauma is a relational injury.

Which explains why, after, we might try to make home in isolation. Why we may be lonely, but hold our tongues. Or why we might seek interactions that only reinforce our positions, and therefore, protect ourselves from knowing each other and being known.

Intimacy is connection at the point of vulnerability. It is the revelation.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - My holiday message. Emotionally rescue fewer people. Cross fewer boundaries trying to explain your own. Betray yourself less than last year. Let people feel disappointment, frustration, etc. Letting emotions happen without seeking control or stasis too quickly allows us to meet each other in the uncomfortable real. Happy holidays from your very awkward friend!
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - The students and protestors leading us through this moment are showing us a vision for safety that is about each of us; a vision that shows us that all of our safety is intertwined with the safety of Palestinian people.

Hold on to what guides you.
Hold on to your vision of safety.
Hold on to your center.

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Quite honestly, this year has been a beast in every way. And I’m starting to learn the lessons of it enough to say thank you.

I’m starting to let go enough to let spirit take over.

I’m learning again that boundaries are love because loss and shame will try to convince you love is compliance or silence.

I’m still learning that forgiveness and accountability are not a package. They support the other but do not depend on each other the way we think they do.

I’m learning to bring everything into the light of love, myself and others. We’re all worthy. And I’m grateful to my people who teach me this. I’m grateful from the depths of it all. Thank you for helping me feel every drop of this heartbreaking, breathtaking, almost unbearable life.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Bringing this one back for today. This is a photo about distancing, about memory, about home. About child and father. It’s about that feeling you have when no apologies have been spoken, when you learned how to forgive on your own, when ego and trauma weigh heavy, when you’re always leaving and always tethered. This is a picture of as good as it gets.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - The Courage Song aka The Diarrhea Song for when you have to do something hard. Feel free to send me all the covers.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - In What it Takes to Heal I write about taking myself on hot tub cry dates. Yesterday on a book tour break I revisited Piedmont Springs and the water that helped me relearn how to cry. I really used to boohoo in this tub y’all, but yesterday was just tears of gratitude.

The Bay Area is so full of homecomings and reunions for me. And I have so much love for how this place shaped me, taught me and brought me back to myself again.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Emotions are used politically.

*captions won’t work the whole video for some reason. will reupload when I can get it to work.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - An important part of embodiment is developing our awareness of what we actually do and not just what we *think* we’re doing. This is Pt. 1 of a multi part series on how I define embodiment. #somatics #embodiment #therapy #somatictherapy
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Without shade, I can’t get up in arms anymore about much. I try to receive the lesson in the core and keep pushing. Debating absolute guilt or innocence is for the system. Growing, learning, accountability is for the people. But I will say what I’ve learned most clearly in this is that most of us do not know protection. Have never felt it, long for it. Some of us don’t know how to do it well for others. I am learning to allow/demand/receive protection late in life. And I’m teaching my child early.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - 2nd installment on embodiment is about…PRACTICE.

My training at @generative.somatics taught me that we are “always practicing something”. What you are taught to practice, what you are forced to practice and what we choose to practice is a part of what becomes embodied in us. It becomes what we do automatically. The question is what have you gotten good through practice?

#embodiment #social change
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - When I was a kid I played double dutch at recess and after school. I remember that feeling of watching the ropes until a blur became two and two became rhythm and my body wanted to jump into the gap. I think about that sideline hesitation a lot, studying, how necessary it was to enter the collective altered state that is double dutch. How you measured the skill and beat of the ropes before you got in. Were they going to take me where I wanted to go, the place of no-thought or would I just be running the whole time?

I think about it sometimes when I’m unsure how to enter this game of social media, how to jump into the fray. I know the pull will get me eventually. I’ll start thinking in characters again, I’ll figure out what is worthwhile to share, but I’m feeling so delightfully quiet and spacious now. Focused too, but not forced. Intimate. Watching my kid discover their body, seeing their recognition that I’m inside of my body too. It’s exquisite and more than I can seem to convey here. It is also exhausting to try to be interesting.

I think the point is to find your pace. Your life is miraculous even if a lot of people don’t see it or like it. No one really knows what they’re doing and a lot of the fun parts and all of the shameful ones you’ll never see. You exist even if you don’t feel like posting or promoting or even looking. You can close your eyes altogether or just rest them and let yourself be really seen for a change. Anyway, I’m looking for a beat this year that is mine. Moving in the gaps.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - I try not to ever become too hard with certainty.
I have to leave room for life to always reach me.

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Writing a book is hard, turns out. But here I am doing it anyway. Ancestors at my back.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - As comfortable as I am in my skin most days I still get that sinking feeling that I don’t fit.

I don’t fit any of our known stories on gender. I know none of us really do.

But from where I sit, I see the way we project onto each other because we’re afraid of and not really practiced at looking closely. I watch people make me a woman or a man, a sister when they need it, a father too. I watch myself give people what they ask for sometimes just to be seen. Because much of my life I watch people look right through me as though I were invisible because they can’t fathom who I could be.

This is a failure of our imagination, to not meet people openly. Maybe in doing so it risks what we are most afraid of, that we might be seen.

My discomfort is not in my own being. I’m comfortable here. Soft and sturdy, serious and loving, silly. I know my existence is a reminder for all of us to live presently, to meet each other in the now of it all. And I hope the ones that follow feel less of the weight, are left with fewer questions, that they know without any doubt that they’re real.

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Quietly wintering over here. Solitude and sweetness. Writing, writing, writing. Dancing, laughter and matching pajamas.

This can be the season of enmeshment, generational habits of avoiding intimacy, and surfaced secrets. It is also the season of expressing good ole boundaries, listening to what’s wise in you, and minding your own Black ass business.

May you all have surprisingly vulnerable and heart felt conversations to close the year and may you have the strength to leave while you’re still in a good mood. ❤️

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - There is no mind/body split.

There is only incentivized denial. There is only how we’ve learned to hold our breath and feeling at bay above the things we’ve done or that have been done to us.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - I remember marching on the 60th anniversary of the Nakba (the Catastrophe in Arabic), heartbroken, but understanding probably just a fraction of what the day meant for Palestinians.

We’re here now here at the 76th anniversary and witnessing more devastation that I would have thought possible. Many thousands fleeing, many, many thousands dead. Colonization is a terror that tries to leave you with nothing, tries to put you in the past.

We have to reject it always.

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - In our first official episode of Becoming the People, I wanted to speak to Vivian Sansour (@vivien.sansour), a Palestinian artist, researcher, writer, and founder of the Palestine Heirloom Seed Library.

I ask you to bear witness to Vivien and listen deeply as she shares her profound wisdom, her prayers for the Palestinian people, and how seeds hold the hope and stories of her people amidst atrocity.

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - As a child, books were my escape and my pathway to creativity and adventure. They offered a portal for me to access the safety and freedom that I longed for. In writing What it Takes to Heal, I realized early on that I wanted it to be an accompaniment for those leaning deeper into courageous exploration of their feelings and the areas of their lives that are yearning for care and transformation.

What It Takes to Heal: How Transforming Ourselves Can Change the World available today.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - If we believed in change, we might become vulnerable to self-reflection.
We might find accountability much easier and forgiveness closer.
We might build movements that disturb the comfort of this reality and change the world.

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - I am currently in the south of France chasing the ghost of Baldwin (again) and finishing this book at odd hours. I walked the road to his house yesterday, but I turned around before I got there. They’ve made it into condos. The town tried to forget him, but didn’t account for the weirdos like me who make the pilgrimage and refuse to let him die. I prefer to imagine his walks at night, like mine, crooked and intoxicated, a sly smile under the bougainvilleas. The flat I’m staying in is above a cafe owned by the only other Black person I’ve seen in many days. I asked her if she knew anything about Baldwin. Turns out her father made a sculpture of him she promised to find for me. She asked me if I knew her cousin in Chicago. I don’t. I had google translate say on my behalf that we’d probably been in Chicago at the same time, but there are so many of us there we wouldn’t have known to look for each other. I said it more for my sake than hers. I’m not sure she got my message. Anyway, it’s very sweet here and I’m having a lot of what I call fun.

7. A sign warning against vague immersion

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - On the right is a kid who grew up in Texas that would have greatly benefited from someone, anyone saying that it was ok to be different. They would have benefited from hearing the words gay or trans spoken without contempt or shame. Maybe the kid on the right wouldn’t have been contemplating multiplication at the same time they were thinking of leaving earth.

So to the bigoted legislators in Texas and Florida, and especially to the people that elect them, these laws ultimately impact the awkward, beautiful, wild, bodies of kids just like this. If your job isn’t protecting them most of all you have no business in anybody’s office.

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Trauma begets trauma. What we are seeing is the creation of trauma that will last long after our lives. Trauma that intends to — and is intended to — spread across generations, across land and through families, invading moments of intimacy, dissolving connection in perpetuity. What we are seeing is how trauma, when offered domination rather than safety or reckoning, collective witnessing or process, will brutally destroy life in the false and confused pursuit of that safety. We will continue reproducing it until we understand this. Nothing ever really goes away.
Prentis Hemphill Instagram - I'm really grateful for so many new (and old) followers on here! I've felt so filled up by the support and especially how the conversation on embodiment, emotions and freedom keeps growing. So I'm going to do what I've never done before and do an introductory post to welcome everyone here to this space that we're creating.⁣
⁣
I'm Prentis! My name means student. I chose it intentionally as a reminder to remain a student, to stay curious and willing to change. I am Black, queer, southern. I'm a friend, someone's love, someone's baby, a sibling and a parent to a sunbeam.⁣
⁣
I believe that feeling is a portal to freedom. I want for all of us to have access to our fullest range of emotions, sensations, perception. I want us to be liberated from ways of being that try to pass our own suffering on to others. I want us all to feel the kind of love that wraps gently around you and encourages you to grow. I want us to be held in our grief and pain. I want us to come alive to the world around us, to belong here again. At times I am a person who worries about how much we are encouraged into reactivity and away from the extraordinary, miraculous experience it is to be alive. But then I remember what a teacher once told me, which is that, no matter what, life is always bigger! I believe that.⁣

You can engage with my musings on embodiment and liberation here, the trainings my team does at @the.embodiment.institute and my community of compasses on @findingourwaypodcast
⁣
I am getting used to building community in this way, using my page as a place to come together. But I would love it if you shared something here about you and if you stayed to read about someone else too. ❤️⁣

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - Y'all. I had a conversation with @estherperelofficial this past month as a part of her Sessions training program for practitioners, therapists, coaches, etc. We had a conversation on boundaries, on individual and collective trauma, and on the potential of embodied practice to reveal us to ourselves and each other. It was exciting to chop it up with such a skilled therapist and reenter the therapeutic space to have conversations on liberation and the collective that I wish I'd had more of in school.

The link to check out sessions is: https://sessions.estherperel.com/ . We'll also drop it in the linktree. More info on our live conversation coming up in May!

Oh and shout out @priyaparker for making this very special connection happen!

Prentis Hemphill Instagram - We have a new podcast coming called Becoming the People. I’ll be talking with the thinkers, creators, and doers who are exploring some of the most relevant questions of this moment: What will it take for us to change as a species? How do we create relationships that lead to transformation, and what will it take for us to heal?

We hope this podcast helps us uncover the path of how to become the people of our time. The first episode drops on June 3rd and it’s a special one because my dear friend @adriennemareebrown will be interviewing me about my upcoming book.

If you’re following the @findingourwaypodcast you’ll receive the episodes of BTP in your feed. If not, follow us on Apple Podcast, Spotify or wherever you listen.

Excited to be on this journey with you.

I love the language I have found in somatic therapy — a form of healing that transcends spoken word and taps into the wisdom of the body, individual and collective. It’s that spark and common fascination that drew me to Prentis’ work.

@prentishemphill is a therapist, somatics teacher and facilitator, political organizer, writer and the founder of The Embodiment Institute. They are dedicated to unearthing connections between healing, community accountability and our most inspired visions for social transformation.

In this Session, we started by asking, what is the purpose of therapy at this moment? What are ways that somatics is applied to that therapeutic focus? We explore the ways that power shapes our experiences and social relationships. We discuss collective trauma and how the individual and communal experience is defined by a question of belonging, the delineation of “us and them” during the allocation of resources—and how these political decisions and maneuvers impact the body and collective response.

If you’re interested in joining our clinical community and diving more deeply into these topics, learn more about Sessions through the link below.

Prentis Hemphill - 9.1K Likes - Seeing the cover of this, my first book, What It Takes To Heal, for the first time left me without the ‘right’ words to describe how I felt.

Caption : Seeing the cover of this, my first book, What It Takes To Heal, for the first time left me without the ‘right’ words to describe how I felt.

Let people feel disappointment, frustration, etc. Letting emotions happen without seeking control or stasis too quickly allows us to meet each other in the uncomfortable real. Happy holidays from your very awkward friend!

It’s about that feeling you have when no apologies have been spoken, when you learned how to forgive on your own, when ego and trauma weigh heavy, when you’re always leaving and always tethered. This is a picture of as good as it gets.

My training at @generative.somatics taught me that we are “always practicing something”. What you are taught to practice, what you are forced to practice and what we choose to practice is a part of what becomes embodied in us. It becomes what we do automatically. The question is what have you gotten good through practice?

There is only incentivized denial. There is only how we’ve learned to hold our breath and feeling at bay above the things we’ve done or that have been done to us.

We’re here now here at the 76th anniversary and witnessing more devastation that I would have thought possible. Many thousands fleeing, many, many thousands dead. Colonization is a terror that tries to leave you with nothing, tries to put you in the past.

We have to reject it always.

In writing What it Takes to Heal, I realized early on that I wanted it to be an accompaniment for those leaning deeper into courageous exploration of their feelings and the areas of their lives that are yearning for care and transformation.

Prentis Hemphill - 3K Likes - I am currently in the south of France chasing the ghost of Baldwin (again) and finishing this book at odd hours.

2. My travel alter ego drinks coffee, and regrets it.

3. Saint Paul de Vence, dead or alive

4. Morning breeze in the flat

Prentis Hemphill - 3K Likes - On the right is a kid who grew up in Texas that would have greatly benefited from someone, anyone saying that it was ok to be different.

So to the bigoted legislators in Texas and Florida, and especially to the people that elect them, these laws ultimately impact the awkward, beautiful, wild, bodies of kids just like this. If your job isn’t protecting them most of all you have no business in anybody’s office. #protecttranskids #protectqueerkids #dontsaygaybill

Prentis Hemphill - 2.9K Likes - Trauma begets trauma.

Prentis Hemphill - 2.8K Likes - I'm really grateful for so many new (and old) followers on here!

Prentis Hemphill - 2.7K Likes - Y'all.

Prentis Hemphill - 2.7K Likes - We have a new podcast coming called Becoming the People.

Prentis Hemphill - 2.1K Likes - More from my conversation with @estherperelofficial on politicized healing and embodiment.

Repost from @estherperelofficial
