The students and protestors leading us through this moment are showing us a vision for safety that is about each of us; a vision that shows us that all of our safety is intertwined with the safety of Palestinian people. Hold on to what guides you. Hold on to your vision of safety. Hold on to your center.
In What it Takes to Heal I write about taking myself on hot tub cry dates. Yesterday on a book tour break I revisited Piedmont Springs and the water that helped me relearn how to cry. I really used to boohoo in this tub y’all, but yesterday was just tears of gratitude. The Bay Area is so full of homecomings and reunions for me. And I have so much love for how this place shaped me, taught me and brought me back to myself again.

I remember marching on the 60th anniversary of the Nakba (the Catastrophe in Arabic), heartbroken, but understanding probably just a fraction of what the day meant for Palestinians. We’re here now here at the 76th anniversary and witnessing more devastation that I would have thought possible. Many thousands fleeing, many, many thousands dead. Colonization is a terror that tries to leave you with nothing, tries to put you in the past. We have to reject it always.
We have a new podcast coming called Becoming the People. I’ll be talking with the thinkers, creators, and doers who are exploring some of the most relevant questions of this moment: What will it take for us to change as a species? How do we create relationships that lead to transformation, and what will it take for us to heal? We hope this podcast helps us uncover the path of how to become the people of our time. The first episode drops on June 3rd and it’s a special one because my dear friend @adriennemareebrown will be interviewing me about my upcoming book. If you’re following the @findingourwaypodcast you’ll receive the episodes of BTP in your feed. If not, follow us on Apple Podcast, Spotify or wherever you listen. Excited to be on this journey with you.
I am at a loss of words for what I’ve seen and what I’ve not seen but know is happening. In Rafah, in the Congo, in Sudan, in Haiti. In us. Second slide: @johnnylaveie, repost from @ajamonet

I never feel unclear about who this day is for because I know it’s for you. Happy Juneteenth.
Embodiment is in our rituals. It’s in our songs, in our dance. It’s in our food. It’s in the hugs that we give each other. It’s not necessarily always in some obscure or hard-to-get-to training. It’s within us already, and a lot of our work is to honor the things we already know, and the things that have been given to us by generations before us.
This week, I’m joined by Kai Cheng Thom (@kaichengthom) — MSW, Qualified Mediator, Somatic Sex Educator, performance artist, community healer, award-winning writer, and author of Falling Back in Love with Being Human. A consummate dreamer and believer in revolutionary potential, Kai brings radical love to her work and this conversation. In this episode Kai and I geek out about many exciting and dangerous things like monster-making, harm and revenge, and queerness and love. Listen to the podcast on #Applepodcast #Spotify or wherever you find your podcasts. You can watch the full unedited visual episode on Patreon @prentishemphill
My loves. 💜
🚨Entering the bank holiday weekend with some very exciting news to share! We are both thrilled and proud to be publishing What It Takes To Heal this summer, the compassionate and transformative book by @prentishemphill 💙 – As we emerge from the past few years of collective upheaval, are we ready to face the complexities of our time with joy, authenticity, and connection? Now more than ever, we must learn to heal ourselves, connect with one another, and embody our values. In this revolutionary book, the incredible @prentishemphill shows us how. What It Takes to Heal asserts that the principles of embodiment – the recognition of our body’s sensations and habits, and the beliefs that inform them – are critical to lasting healing and transformation. Hemphill, an expert embodiment practitioner, therapist, and activist, who has partnered with Tarana Burke and Esther Perel, among others, shows us that we don’t have to carry our emotional burdens alone. Hemphill demonstrates a future in which healing is done in community, weaving together stories from their own experience as a trauma survivor with clinical accounts and lessons learned from their time as a social movement architect. In this life-affirming framework for the way forward, Hemphill shows us how to heal our bodies, minds and souls – to develop the interpersonal skills necessary to break down the doors of disconnection and take the necessary risks to reshape our world towards justice. 🗓️ What It Takes To Heal is available to pre-order now will be available to buy from 25 July from all good bookshops and online.

Trauma is political. If we can come to understand trauma in this dynamic way, then we can also understand what it might take for us to really heal.
