These are the moments that will stick with me from the DNC this past week. The ones that made me laugh, took my breath away, brought me to tears, and called me in. For our newsletter, I wrote about the origin story of this photograph and how defying the purity test placed on women in leadership is a fight worth having—whether it’s Hillary Clinton and what we’ve learned from the past or it’s Kamala Harris and the future of the “Forward” Movement. 📸 Meeting @HillaryClinton, thanks to @Mary_Steenburgen, and getting to hear her powerful speech at a private event in 2003 when I was just 20 years old. It changed the trajectory of my life forever. Link in bio to read the full essay.
This summer I had the chance to participate in a new series for @Substack highlighting the quality of work and diversity of voices on the platform (all beautifully produced by @Cash_Studios). I’m reflecting on how far our newsletter, Listening in the Dark, has come since the beginning of 2023: from a smattering of subscribers to a full-fledged community of thousands interested in creative writing, politics, cultural catharsis, and the audacity of Dermot Mulroney. (You may not think you need a thirst trap essay on the subject, but oh, dear reader, you really do.) To celebrate, we’re launching a new monthly Zoom gathering for subscribers: ✨The Short and Sweet✨ I’ll host writing workshops, craft talks, political discussions, invite incredible guests to join us, and more. Signing up is easy, algorithm-free, and you’ll never get spam from me. (See what I did there? I rhymed. I’m a poet.) Visit AmberTamblyn.Substack.com or click the link in my bio to make scrolling on your phone joyful again. (Extra special shoutout to @SuleikaJaouad and Dan Stone for getting me started on this journey almost two years ago.) #ListeningInTheDark #SubstackOriginals
