I met Cheri 25 years ago at a party in Hancock Park. Thank you Caroline Rhea for all your fabulous gatherings. You always know the coolest people.
After, I convinced Cheri that I wasn’t a stalker, we actually had a really nice conversation and at some point I turned to her and said eagerly, “I think we should be friends. Don’t you think we would be good friends?” And in Cheri’s quick witted fashion, she said, “ Oh sure, I know how it goes at these Hollywood parties, everybody wants to be friends and then you never hear from them again.” And I said, “ I know you don’t believe me, but I’m going to call you and we’re going to be friends goddamnit! And that was pretty much the end of our conversation.
I quickly tracked down our host Caroline and told her that Cheri told me to get her number from her, and just like that, she gave it to me. And then I walked into the next room and called her.
She laughed so hard.
The woman who had brought me so much joy on Saturday Night Live, who made me laugh till my stomach hurt……thought I was funny. It made my heart happy.
I invited her to a card game at my house and she came. And since then, there have been hundreds of game nights, dinner parties, trips to New York, Christmas Eve’s and Thanksgivings, birthday parties, soulful talks, shared friends, and dozens of Milo’s plays that I forced her to go to. She taught Milo how to tap an imaginary microphone and say, “Is this thing on?” He got a lot of mileage out of that.
Cheri, I cherish our friendship and to this day one of my greatest joys is to make you laugh.
Happy Birthday. May this year bring you many wonderful surprises. 🎉🎈🎊
