Happy Birthday to my dear, beautiful, talented, hilarious, loyal & soulful friend, Cheri Oteri.🎈 I met Cheri 25 years ago at a party in Hancock Park. Thank you Caroline Rhea for all your fabulous gatherings. You always know the coolest people. After, I convinced Cheri that I wasn’t a stalker, we actually had a really nice conversation and at some point I turned to her and said eagerly, “I think we should be friends. Don’t you think we would be good friends?” And in Cheri’s quick witted fashion, she said, “ Oh sure, I know how it goes at these Hollywood parties, everybody wants to be friends and then you never hear from them again.” And I said, “ I know you don’t believe me, but I’m going to call you and we’re going to be friends goddamnit! And that was pretty much the end of our conversation. I quickly tracked down our host Caroline and told her that Cheri told me to get her number from her, and just like that, she gave it to me. And then I walked into the next room and called her. She laughed so hard. The woman who had brought me so much joy on Saturday Night Live, who made me laugh till my stomach hurt……thought I was funny. It made my heart happy. I invited her to a card game at my house and she came. And since then, there have been hundreds of game nights, dinner parties, trips to New York, Christmas Eve’s and Thanksgivings, birthday parties, soulful talks, shared friends, and dozens of Milo’s plays that I forced her to go to. She taught Milo how to tap an imaginary microphone and say, “Is this thing on?” He got a lot of mileage out of that. Cheri, I cherish our friendship and to this day one of my greatest joys is to make you laugh. Happy Birthday. May this year bring you many wonderful surprises. 🎉🎈🎊 @carolinerhea4real @cheri_oteri

Certain theatrical events are seared into our consciousness. The play I saw tonight, Counting and Cracking was one of them. There are no words I can impart that will do it justice. It is a magnificent piece of theater. So beautiful, so in your face and yet somehow so nuanced. It is funny but heartbreaking, simple but shattering, and it takes flight the moment it begins. Counting and Cracking tells a gripping international story of a cultural rift, of war and diaspora, of family and politics. It splits its focus between several time periods and across continents. In a cast of 19 performers, hailing from six different countries and playing a total of 50 characters. I don’t have enough positive adjectives in my vocabulary to accurately describe how stunning the actors were. One mind blowing performance after another. It’s a breathtaking tail of generational trauma. But it’s the joy and spirit of the production that makes Counting and Cracking so memorable and moving. There is so much love in this production. And the directing team should take a bow for the wonderfully playful and imaginative staging that brings the story to life. You can hear the collective sighs from the audience as the performers delight us and move us to tears. I love, love, loved it. There are only five shows left at the Skirball Theater at NYU. I urge you to see it if you can. ❤️ @publictheaterny @nyuskirball @lathemlaurie @shakthidharan

Last night the American Theatre Wing had a Gala honoring the “Unsung Heroes” of the theater. From dressers who execute seamless quick changes between scenes, to understudies and swings who go into a show with little to no notice, to make-up artists responsible for the flawless faces seen on stage, to vocal coaches that make New York’s finest actors ready for 8 shows a week, to the security team that keeps us safe, and to our stage managers who make it possible for the show to go on each and every night. The incomparable actress, Jenn Colella (Come From Away & Suffs) nominated my dear friend Lisa Iacucci to be honored as an unsung hero. I met Lisa the year I graduated college. I knew the minute we worked together that I was going to know her the rest of my life. She is one of those gems that you have to pick up and put in your pocket. She has been there for every major event in my life, including when my son was born. Not only is she an outstanding stage manager, she’s an incredible friend and an exceptional human. Standing at only 5 foot tall, we call her li’l Lisa but don’t let that the fool you, she is a gentle giant with the biggest heart. Congratulations Lisa. You’ve been my unsung hero for over three decades. ❤️ @JenColella @TheWing liacucci @Suffsmusical @suffsband @milomanheim

Jacob McNeal (Robert Downey Jr.) is a great writer, one of the greatest. A perpetual candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature, McNeal is driven by an engine only a narcissist could sustain. McNeal also has an estranged son, a few powerful women he has to contend with, a new novel, and an unhealthy fascination with Artificial Intelligence. Bravo to Robert for taking on this epic role. He is wonderful, dynamic, grandiose and plays the role to perfection. A man in need of relentless admiration. Melora Hardin is outstanding as the retired editor of the New York Times. So moving. So smart. So compelling. So radiant. So powerful. The entire cast is excellent including Andrea Martin, Ruthie Ann Miles, Brittany Bellizeare, Saisha Talwar and Rafi Gavron (who gives a particularly heartbreaking performance.) Pulitzer Prize-winner Ayad Akhtar’s new play is a startling and wickedly smart examination of the inescapable humanity – and increasing inhumanity – of the stories we tell. He is such a gorgeous writer. One of the best of our generation. Directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher. It is so clever, surprising, innovative and current. It’s also terrifying to realize that we can never put the A.I. genie back in the bottle. I haven’t stopped talking about since I saw it. Get your tickets before it sells out, if it hasn’t already. McNeal runs at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center. @lincolncenter @mcnealbroadway @robertdowneyjr @meloradhardin @bartlett.sher @ayadakhtar @iamandreamartin @ruthieannmiles @saishatalwar @gavronrafi @thebobkirsh @dannybur
