I recently passed the 20 year anniversary of my first ever shoot on A Place in the Sun. Two decades ago, my career turned onto a different path which has shaped so many factors of my life until now. From meeting my husband, having our children, moving to Spain, to making so many wonderful friends over the years. In particular, one very special friend… Jonnie and I started our Television careers together, which makes the 20 year anniversary especially poignant. Without him, I have not really felt like celebrating. I’ve been pretty choked up about posting anything about it to be honest. I miss him. He was always full of fun and mischief, it doesn’t seem possible that he is gone. In Jonnie’s memory, I give you a snippet of the last 20 years. It’s been a month since we lost a very special person; someone I was lucky enough to call a friend. Time has this weird habit of keeping on going when it feels like it should stop. Today I’m at A Place in the Sun Live and it is hard as Jonnie is on my mind a lot. Over the years, we were always filming in different locations and so we most frequently got to spend time together at the A Place in the Sun Live events. This photo was taken here last year in Manchester. It feels strange and sad to be here without him. He was such an inspiration to so many people and he is missed so much. Jonnie Irwin – I will always remember the first time I heard your name. When I was doing a screen test for a new show, they said “we definitely want Jonnie, but we need to find another presenter”. I wondered who this mysterious Jonnie was. We met in Cape Town, filming the pilot. You we’re so charismatic and energetic, so confident and fun. I understood immediately why they had to have you. Your cheeky-chappy persona and naughty sense of humour always broke the ice and made people laugh. Everyone warmed to you and you had the incredible ability to connect with people, making them feel like they’d known you for years. To begin our TV careers together was a pleasure and a privilege I will be eternally grateful for. Almost twenty years ago, as two nervous new presenters (me perhaps more nervous than you!) little did we know about the adventure we were about to embark on, and the friends we would become. Professionally, you were well suited to life in front of the lens. But for years, you always talked about wanting to settle down and become a dad. Your wish was granted when you met Jess. Never were you happier than in your role as husband and Dad to the most awesome three boys – you are a legend. Life is simply not fair. We can’t reason with it; there are no answers to the question Why? We can, in your memory learn to cherish every hug, every conversation, every moment, for the priceless time we have. Enjoy every breath, every sunrise and sunset, never take anything for granted, because tomorrow is not promised. Jonnie, you’ve taught me so much in our time as work colleagues and as good friends. I have never admired you more than over the last few years as you’ve faced life with cancer with positivity, determination and bloody mindedness. I’ve never known anyone as strong as you. You have done yourself, your loved ones and all of us proud. The world is a little darker today without you, but I will always smile when I think of you. My partner in crime, my OG co-presenter – Jonnie, I will miss you. Sending so much love to Jonnie’s family & loved ones. 💔
It’s been a roller coaster of a week! Full of highs and lows, but no matter the obstacles we face trying to reach our dreams, and whether we take a direct route or a more meandering path, as long as we keep taking one step after another, there is no limit to what we can achieve. Today marks one year since we started our new life in Spain ☀️We’d thought long and hard about the move and it was definitely the right decision for our family work/life balance, but it is fair to say that there were many challenges that I wasn’t expecting initially, and whilst the children settled in fairly quickly, it took me a while to really begin to feel at home here! But we did it! Happy 1 year in Spain to us! 🩷🇪🇸 It’s been the most marvellous year, and now we have a brand new adventure on the horizon! 🏡 ☺️ Swipe for 1 year update! What an inspirational couple I’ve been house-hunting with this week! After losing their daughter to cancer, they’ve decided to make the most of life and fulfil their dream of moving to Spain. As we come to the end of January, and I celebrate my 10 year “veganniversary”, (where did that time go!?! 😃) I’m just reflecting on how the whole landscape and conversation about veganism has changed over the past decade. So many more options, so much more mainstream. Everyone knows what it is and people are becoming aware of all the amazing benefits – kindness, ethics, health, environment. ☺️🐮💚🌍 I have never looked back since becoming vegan and feel so much happier, living in line with my values. AD I’m so happy to be partnering with @cottontradersuk on their ‘Come Together with Cotton Traders’ campaign this International Women’s Day! 🌸✨ Let’s be honest, feeling confident and body positive is sometimes easier said than done. We all have our insecurities and I have to admit that as I get older, my priorities have changed when it comes to fashion. I still want to feel stylish, but I feel like I know myself better, I’m more confident about my own style. I enjoy wearing clothes to suit my shape, that are comfortable and flattering. I just love seeing women of all different shapes and sizes, different ages and different cultures, embracing themselves and lifting each other up. I love the fact that the whole landscape has changed around body positivity and I can see it filtering down to younger generations. Although we still have work to do regarding representation of all groups of women, I love the fact that my daughter is growing up with a much wider range of female role models than I had when I was young and impressionable.
