Mona Chalabi Instagram – Last week, faculty at several New York universitiesΒ organized the People’s Graduation because so many ceremonies were moved or cancelled (the President of Columbia was more interested in hosting cops on campus than her students). I’m so grateful to have been there. Unfortunately, I started ugly crying when I saw the faces of the Palestinian journalists in the crowd and could barely get the words from my mouth to the mic. I’m not going to say something trite like β€œI’m proud of these kids” – I’m mostly just sad and bitter that thisΒ class got too old tooΒ soon. They hadΒ to spend their educational time teaching people who should know better.Β

As a thank you, I made this limited edition print as a gift for the class of 2024. Only the good got them.
Mona Chalabi Instagram – Not long after the US began bombing Iraq, doctors started to say that they were seeing a huge, huge increase in rates of cancer and “abnormalities” in babies. In 2010, researchers finally showed that this wasn’t anecdotal.Β In Fallujah, leukemia rates increased by 2,200% and childhood cancer increased byΒ 1,260%. They also found that brain tumors rose by 740% and infant mortality rates were 820% higher than they were in neighboring countries.Β

The explanation for all of this was simple: uranium. The researchers found the element in women’s hair and believe that uranium weapons were used by the US inΒ Iraq (similar evidence was found in Gaza where Israel has used uranium weapons against civilians).Β

I included the comparison here to another atrocity not because I want to diminish it. The US attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki *should* be regarded as despicable acts. But I want to underline that the US has a long history of human rights abuses and I also want to highlight that not all of those abuses get the same recognition.Β
