In 2002, Moshe Ya’alon (who was then the chief of staff for the Israeli Defense Forces) said “This is first and foremost a war of ideology, and as such the media factor, the psychological impact of our actions, is critical. If we understand that a photograph of a tank speaks against us on CNN, we can take this into account in our decision as to whether or not to send in the tank.”

Apartheid isn’t just a system of explicitly racist rules. It functions by blurring those policies in confusing and frustrating ways. Since this list was published in May 2010, the rules change all the time for no apparent reason and they are no longer stated publicly (or even shared privately with international diplomats or aid agencies). Israeli apartheid has become even more oppressive. This system is not designed to protect Israelis, it is designed to prevent Palestinians from having healthy, dignified and joyful lives (“biscuits and sweets” are not a security threat). The illustrations were inspired by @mousbay who read this list to an audience in April. It was profound, especially the ending (cartons for transporting chicks = 👍🏻, chicks = ✋🏻).

Last week, faculty at several New York universities organized the People’s Graduation because so many ceremonies were moved or cancelled (the President of Columbia was more interested in hosting cops on campus than her students). I’m so grateful to have been there. Unfortunately, I started ugly crying when I saw the faces of the Palestinian journalists in the crowd and could barely get the words from my mouth to the mic. I’m not going to say something trite like “I’m proud of these kids” – I’m mostly just sad and bitter that this class got too old too soon. They had to spend their educational time teaching people who should know better.
As a thank you, I made this limited edition print as a gift for the class of 2024. Only the good got them.

I’ve been speaking to these researchers since November to write this piece. Unfortunately, their findings have been misrepresented in most coverage – they have *not* found that the death toll in Gaza is actually 186,000. In a way, what they’re saying is much more powerful. Their research shows that if forced starvation and deprivation of health services continues, the death toll will soar to this enormous figure. They are warning us what will happen if these lethal restrictions are not lifted and violence continues. The Israeli government (and governments that support them) have the ability to stop these deaths if they so choose. What’s even more shocking about their research is how conservative these estimates are. The final death toll could be much higher meaning that more than 8% of people in Gaza will be killed. Not long after the US began bombing Iraq, doctors started to say that they were seeing a huge, huge increase in rates of cancer and “abnormalities” in babies. In 2010, researchers finally showed that this wasn’t anecdotal. In Fallujah, leukemia rates increased by 2,200% and childhood cancer increased by 1,260%. They also found that brain tumors rose by 740% and infant mortality rates were 820% higher than they were in neighboring countries.
The explanation for all of this was simple: uranium. The researchers found the element in women’s hair and believe that uranium weapons were used by the US in Iraq (similar evidence was found in Gaza where Israel has used uranium weapons against civilians).
I included the comparison here to another atrocity not because I want to diminish it. The US attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki *should* be regarded as despicable acts. But I want to underline that the US has a long history of human rights abuses and I also want to highlight that not all of those abuses get the same recognition.

The population of Sudan is suffering right now as a result of man-made famine, mass killings and the spread of preventable diseases but it’s Sudanese children who are especially vulnerable right now. Out of the 22 million children in the country, 19 million of them are out of school and 4 million of them have been displaced from their homes. Some children have even been forced by armed groups to fight. Made this for a piece with Faisal Ali in the Guardian earlier this month. Sources: International Rescue Committee and UNICEF, June 2024
I first made this illustration in 2021 but I recently updated it while doing research for an exhibition at the Smithsonian Design Museum with @situ_nyc. We’ve been working on an installation all about domicide (the widespread and systematic destruction of housing) that opens this November. This dataset doesn’t cover Gaza – you would need a scale that is 40x bigger if you wanted to include those demolitions. These Israeli constructions on Palestinian land are *completely* illegal under international law.

If you add up everyone who lives in Italy, Mali *and* Yemen, it’s still less than the 117 million people worldwide who have been displaced from their homes. @refugees considers every single one of them as deserving of human rights – I was honored that they asked me to design the cover and illustrations for their annual education report.
