some recent side quests as I learn and relearn that sometimes when your mind calls for isolation, what it really needs is connection. that when it screams retreat, what it really needs is resilience. hope can be learned. believing in yourself and your worth is a skill that you can practice.

Every Tuesday I am celebrating actors I love! Today I am spotlighting Sarah Gilman, who I got to watch regularly in her fan-favorite role of “Penny” in CSI: VEGAS. Sarah has an energy and magnetism that jumps off the screen and I know she’s always looking to delve deeper into the characters she plays – trying to suss out precisely what makes them tick. But it is her off-camera advocacy and honesty regarding mental health that I find particularly inspiring. She has chosen not to hide her own experiences but to share them with others, in speaking engagements and on social media, in hopes of creating a community of trust. Where we can all acknowledge where we’re at, and feel confident to seek help if we need it. I asked Sarah a few questions and here is what she had to say: WHAT IS A MEMORABLE AUDITION STORY YOU HAVE? Years and years ago, before the pandemic and self-tapes (which I must admit are the bane of my existence; I so miss the energy and dynamism in the room reading in person) I was testing for the Disney Channel show I was on (I Didn’t Do It). This is the final stage of auditions full of executives and writers in the famous room with the blue wall that’s all over YouTube with Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus’s auditions and I am NERVOUS. I’m 17-years-old and saying some off the cuff things. At this point in my career I’d auditioned for so many Disney Channel roles and never booked anything, so I kind of assumed they hated me. But I loved the role of Delia, I WAS Delia and I felt really good about my audition. So after we read through the scene, they’re asking me some questions and someone says, “Can you sing?” And to be clear, I can. I did choir and musical theater for years, but I also didn’t see myself as a “singer” and I didn’t want to just say yes because I could. So I said, “not really.” And it’s just so silent a pin could drop. I’m sweating, I definitely should’ve just said yes. And finally some VP goes, “Come on guys, not everyone needs to sing.” Needless to say, I ended up booking the role. Sometimes you just need one champion. Sarah has so much more to share – KEEP READING IN COMMENTS!!! Photo Credit: Margo Renate #actorspotlight
