Throughout his life, Bakhtiar championed the cause of democracy and remained steadfast in his beliefs. He was one of hundreds of dissidents to be extrajudicially executed by the Islamic Republic, a state-sponsored crime for which Iran was never held accountable.
His assassination was on August 6, 1991. The 1990s were one of the deadliest decades for Iranian dissidents in exile.
