Tawny Newsome Instagram – TANZANIA pt 3. – Trekking the Ngorongoro Highlands / Maasai Land

I was so happy to work with @shahtours who we found through @kilimanjaroporterstz when I was searching for an ethical tour operator to handle this part of the trip . It was an obviously such a wild privilege to have all of our meals, campsite setup, guiding and gear taken care of on this five day trek. Our team of porters did it all while keeping us safe, comfortable and, in the case of our local Maasai guides, inviting us to share their breathtaking ancestral homeland.

In addition to fair pay, the locally owned company builds in meals for all porters and Maasai guides, snacks and extra clean water… all at negligible cost to us. It sounds obvious, but we were disappointed to learn from locals that not all companies cover these basic needs. It was a must for me that the people supporting us on this trek were properly cared for. We’re on their land, ffs!

This is some of the most beautiful highland walking I’ve ever done. I can’t recommend this stunning region enough. (Pls expect roughly 2-3 more posts about it minimum, sorry!) And if you’re planning a trip to TZ please use the @kilimanjaroporterstz organization to find a similarly responsible operator for your expedition.
