This morning, the woman who takes care of us and our home, shared the plight of the women and kids where she stays. Her intolerance for alcohol is born out of the violence she sees daily. Wives are forced to have sex, drunk husbands who can’t differentiate between the wife and the daughter, the daughters who today can look at a smart phone and find out the most effective way to die by poisoning. “We did not have cell phones to check in our days, the best way to die” Progress. Chalo. Everyday she gets messages from the school to keep the daughters at home, not let them go out alone and to tell the sons to not rape. More progress. ( Ekla cholo , absolutely not) Her words begin to swirl in my head. We both just sit down on the sofa. Her periods start, early. Mine just come thrice a year now. If men don’t change, I am pretty certain women’s bodies will mutate. Our reproductive functions will shut down. A new woman will be forced to evolve out of the folly of men. And who knows how understanding, how tolerant, she will be? Or husha husha we all fall down.

The above slide is courtesy @mythopia_ The mythological origins of my name provided me little comfort growing up, as it was complicated and difficult to pronounce. As I grew older, and struggled with self esteem, the name took on greater irony. Now, when I actually feel the most comfortable in my skin and with the name my grandmother gave me, I read this post from mythopia, and a new meaning emerges, and I feel uneasy. Two men fight over a woman, and kill themselves, such was her beauty. Oh dear…a woman is weaponized. As Tilottama becomes one of the pseudonyms for yet another ghastly crime against a woman, I feel a bit untethered. Perhaps crime against ALL women can be remembered by the place where it happened or by the name of the perpetrators, as a uniform protocol. What’s in a name etc notwithstanding.

Camels on the beach of Mombasa. By this time, we had seen great beasts of the wild and our mind was open and processing the vastness of it all. When suddenly these very familiar camels crossed us on the beach. The non African and Asian tourists gasped at the sight of these camels and the kids cajoled the parents for a ride. We sipped our dawa ( vodka, lime, sugar, ice and honey) and just smiled. To celebrate the familiar and the unfamiliar, that’s what travel does.
