I have an odd relationship with time—I always seem to be misplacing it—so birthdays are always a bit of an unwelcome reckoning. A reminder that a year’s worth of days have somehow snuck past without my noticing.
Still, I’m trying to embrace the tally. The fact I’ve made it another turn, a rotation marked by new ideas and written books, a few hurdles but more finish lines.
I’ve now been a writer for more than half my life, and I can only hope the best is still ahead. But that’s a lot of pressure to put on a soul, so today I’ll settle for a slice of cake and a blank notebook and a few hours dreaming in the sun.
