15 years ago, I sold my debut novel. I had just turned 22, and spent the summer driving around the US by myself, while The Near Witch went out to publishers, thinking that being alone in a car for 8 hours a day would definitely make the waiting easier (it didn’t). I remember standing in the bedroom, cleaning up cat vomit when I got the call. And I thought, oh my god, my whole life is about to start. I was right, and I was wrong. I didn’t predict the highs or lows that would surround those first five years, the scars they’d leave on the following ten. But I also never gave up. And you all never gave up on me. I write half the story, and readers, you create the rest. And as I add what will be my 25th book to this shelf, I feel so incredibly proud of how far we’ve come together. And so excited for where we are going next.

So. This is 37. I have an odd relationship with time—I always seem to be misplacing it—so birthdays are always a bit of an unwelcome reckoning. A reminder that a year’s worth of days have somehow snuck past without my noticing. Still, I’m trying to embrace the tally. The fact I’ve made it another turn, a rotation marked by new ideas and written books, a few hurdles but more finish lines. I’ve now been a writer for more than half my life, and I can only hope the best is still ahead. But that’s a lot of pressure to put on a soul, so today I’ll settle for a slice of cake and a blank notebook and a few hours dreaming in the sun. Thanks for being on this long road with me.
