V. E. Schwab Instagram – 15 years ago, I sold my debut novel.
I had just turned 22, and spent the summer driving around the US by myself, while The Near Witch went out to publishers, thinking that being alone in a car for 8 hours a day would definitely make the waiting easier (it didn’t). I remember standing in the bedroom, cleaning up cat vomit when I got the call. And I thought, oh my god, my whole life is about to start.
I was right, and I was wrong.
I didn’t predict the highs or lows that would surround those first five years, the scars they’d leave on the following ten.
But I also never gave up.
And you all never gave up on me.
I write half the story, and readers, you create the rest.
And as I add what will be my 25th book to this shelf, I feel so incredibly proud of how far we’ve come together.
