From 1 April 2023, the Bureau of India Standards (BIS) has strictly prohibited the selling of hallmarked gold jewelry or gold artifacts without a 6-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification Number (HUID). Later the deadline was moved from 1st April to 1 July 2023.
These new rules aim to enhance transparency, credibility, and consumer confidence in gold jewelry as goal is considered as one of the safest investment in India.
The hallmarking will give assurance to customers about the gold’s purity. They can also use the BIS CARE app to check the purity. The same application can be used to file a complain against the jewellery.
