Camryn Manheim Instagram – Last night I had the honor of attending the New York City Metropolitan Opera House to see Janine Tesori’s powerful new opera, Grounded.
It was a star studded evening and I’ve never been to anything so fancy and elegant.
Directed by Tony award winner Michael Mayer, this production is visually stunning and the acting is superb.
Every generation has a game changer in every art form. For me, A Chorus Line changed the game. Then RENT, then Hamilton. And Grounded changed the game once again.
Grounded is not your parent’s generation of Opera. With the libretto written by George Brand, he stealthily wrestles with the ethical quandaries and psychological tales of 21st century warfare.
Mezzo soprano Emily D’Angelo one of Opera‘s most compelling young stars, portrayed a hotshot fighter pilot who’s unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas, operating a reaper drone halfway around the world. As she struggles to adjust to this new way of doing battle, she fights to maintain her sanity and her soul.
It was a magical night for me.
