Another holiday weekend, a few more wonderful parties. Thank you to all of our hosts and hostesses for inviting us to celebrate with them. I don’t wanna brag, but I hit 4 parties in 2 days and I saw some cheese platters that put mine to shame. I gotta step it up in the new year. It was wonderful bumping into old friends and squeezing them tight. Happy Holidays Everyone. My advice……………say “Yes” to every invite. Yeah, it’s a schlep, but you won’t regret it.

Last night I had the honor of attending the New York City Metropolitan Opera House to see Janine Tesori’s powerful new opera, Grounded. It was a star studded evening and I’ve never been to anything so fancy and elegant. Directed by Tony award winner Michael Mayer, this production is visually stunning and the acting is superb. Every generation has a game changer in every art form. For me, A Chorus Line changed the game. Then RENT, then Hamilton. And Grounded changed the game once again. Grounded is not your parent’s generation of Opera. With the libretto written by George Brand, he stealthily wrestles with the ethical quandaries and psychological tales of 21st century warfare. Mezzo soprano Emily D’Angelo one of Opera‘s most compelling young stars, portrayed a hotshot fighter pilot who’s unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas, operating a reaper drone halfway around the world. As she struggles to adjust to this new way of doing battle, she fights to maintain her sanity and her soul. It was a magical night for me. Thank you to @tina_turnbow for making me glow and to the designer @BetsyandAdam for making dresses that fit girls like me. I felt like Cinderella at the ball, only better. Because I got to KEEP the gold slippers that I bought online. @thebobkirsh @metopera @cinemasociety @michaelmayerdir @doctorrog @meloradhardin @grofffsauce @michaelcerveris @jeaninetesori

Certain theatrical events are seared into our consciousness. The play I saw tonight, Counting and Cracking was one of them. There are no words I can impart that will do it justice. It is a magnificent piece of theater. So beautiful, so in your face and yet somehow so nuanced. It is funny but heartbreaking, simple but shattering, and it takes flight the moment it begins. Counting and Cracking tells a gripping international story of a cultural rift, of war and diaspora, of family and politics. It splits its focus between several time periods and across continents. In a cast of 19 performers, hailing from six different countries and playing a total of 50 characters. I don’t have enough positive adjectives in my vocabulary to accurately describe how stunning the actors were. One mind blowing performance after another. It’s a breathtaking tail of generational trauma. But it’s the joy and spirit of the production that makes Counting and Cracking so memorable and moving. There is so much love in this production. And the directing team should take a bow for the wonderfully playful and imaginative staging that brings the story to life. You can hear the collective sighs from the audience as the performers delight us and move us to tears. I love, love, loved it. There are only five shows left at the Skirball Theater at NYU. I urge you to see it if you can. ❤️ @publictheaterny @nyuskirball @lathemlaurie @shakthidharan

I went to a screening tonight of the new FX series “Social Studies.” Every single person who has a daughter, has a son, or has a cell phone, needs to see this limited series the second it comes out. It is so important and horrifying you simply can’t believe you stand on the sidelines as this epidemic has poisoned our youth. “Social Studies” is a groundbreaking, character driven documentary series that delves into the lives of the first generation of digital natives. Filmed in Los Angeles over an entire school year, this ambitious social experiment features a diverse group of Los Angeles teens who open up their lives and phones to offer an intimate glimpse into how social media has re-shaped their childhood. From battling bullying, grappling with beauty standards, coping with comparison pressures and racism, exploring sexuality, and making life altering decisions, their compelling and relatable experiences take us on a raw, visceral and urgent journey through the challenges of growing up in the digital era. Lauren Greenfield who brought us Thin(HBO), The Queen of Versailles and Generation Wealth, has tapped into the most pressing issue of our children’s lives. I was captivated and devastated by the 1st episode. Bravo to Lauren and her team for illuminating this issue is such a sensitive and impactful way. I implore you to watch it. The first two episodes drop on September 27 on FX and the following day on Hulu. @greenfield_lauren @frankevers @hulu @social_studies_series @fxnetworks
